Over the years, I have seen that the most impactful efforts are built on these five principles that many in the field champion: 1.) Welcome everyone to the table. A thriving community values many voices and perspectives. Inclusion is not optional; it is essential. 2.) Communicate openly and transparently. Trust grows when people understand the mission and impact. 3.) Empower others. Real change happens when people are given the tools, resources, and encouragement to lead and contribute. 4.) Build partnerships. Collaboration amplifies impact. When we work together, we achieve more than we ever could alone. 5.) Show gratitude. A simple thank you is powerful. It strengthens relationships and fuels continued engagement. Philanthropy is about much more than money. It is about relationships, trust, and shared purpose. Yesterday's summit was a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of place-based philanthropy. Dr. Ruha Benjamin's compelling blend of academic and artistic expression—so resonant with the experiences of many—and the hands-on strategies discussed were both exhilarating and cathartic. Seeing our community come together to tackle these critical issues gives me hope that what we're building here can be a model for other markets. Equitable compensation and funding disparities are challenges that hit close to home for me, having witnessed and navigated these issues in various forms throughout my career. These are not just local problems but systemic issues plaguing our entire industry. I want to give a huge shoutout to The Raymond John Wean Foundation for such and engaging activation and for a board that is willing to stand in solidarity with a bold vision that can change the landscape of this work. I also want to give tremendous kudos to Jennifer Roller. Your diligence and courageous tenacity a treasure to our community and to the field. I’m encouraged by the commitment I saw yesterday to not only acknowledge these inequities but to actively work toward solutions. This work is essential, and it’s heartening to see so many passionate, dedicated individuals rolling up their sleeves to make a difference. Yet, thus broadly understood, pursuit of the common good should be a necessary step in producing more equitable societies and a planet that continues to be habitable. But the devil is in the detail. There is more disagreement than agreement about what comprises the common good. Questions we will explore in the webinar include: Is the common good any more than an abstraction? - Who defines it? - Whose responsibility is it to secure it and, more particularly for today’s discussion, what role does philanthropy have in revivifying the notion and helping to secure its various elements, especially where philanthropy itself is one of the institutions facing scepticism? - Can philanthropy’s commitment to this issue help to restore its legitimacy and the necessary behaviour to become a societal norm for the future?
