Opportunity for Canadian Market

GOING EUROPE AIN'T THAT EASY ------------------------------------- I recently had quite an interesting chat with an American friend of mine. He's an accomplished #b2btech #founder, now scaling his newest #startup. They are fully set up for #success in the US, and are now eyeing Europe as they are seeing initial demand from the old continent. Then he said this one thing... 💪 "We know our customers, we have everything in place, we just replicate this in Europe..". To which I responded: 💥 "I HAVE YET TO MEET THE [b2b tech] MARKET WHERE THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EUROPE AND THE US" Having worked on 4 continents, and particularly long in North America and Europe, I have learnt it the hard way that one needs to do their homework before the big jump. Here a few soundbites 1️⃣ The US tends to be a lot more focused on customer service. 2️⃣ In software, Europe tends to be a lot more demanding. You promised it works, I take that literally. #manbehindthecurtain won't work as well. 3️⃣ European buyers tend to be a lot more skeptical of American overselling. 4️⃣ With their more conservative marketing and selling approach European companies will face a tougher time in the States. 5️⃣ Even the US is not coherent. There a major differences between the coasts and the Mid-West. 6️⃣ US companies prefer buying from a US legal entity. 7️⃣ EU companies are very sensitive on privacy and data protection topics. 8️⃣ Don't assume prospects focus on the same features and benefits of your solution... ... so much more to tell... 🔨 Conclusion: When going across the big pond, involve local experts. How did I learn to do cold calls? In high-speed trains in Germany... I often tell young people that cold calling is one of the most important lifeskills to learn. I learned to do it as a young staff at Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) in Frankfurt. I had no language & no confidence. All I had was a big sales quota to deliver to HQ. I could have sat in the office and asked my staff to do the cold calling for me. After all, cold calling is demeaning work right? Wrong. I worked with my German staff to hone a 1-min elevator pitch for Singapore. Every time I was on a train or plane, I would force myself to deliver the pitch. The first few weeks were the worst. I would delay the pitch and tell myself that I would do it later. But later often turned to never, and never turned into "what ifs?" Eventually, I forced myself to do it enough times that I got used to it. It became a habit and I delivered the pitch automatically, without a second thought, whenever I sat down. Some of my seat neighbours laughed, some ignored me, but some become valuable connections and even invested in Singapore. Most importantly, I hit my quotas. As I pushed myself, my staff pushed themselves too. Hopefully this sharing helps someone looking to do something new, a job, a venture, or just hit their sales quota.
