What are designers doing for US health systems? In our report, The Role of Design in US Health systems, we analyzed and clustered more than 260 projects from 29 health systems design teams. This process identified 9 distinct contribution areas of design, with most teams reporting work in 4 or more areas. Mapping design’s potential value to health systems operations is an important step in accelerating the uptake and deployment of design by health systems. To designers, their work is “just design.” But health systems leaders often struggle to understand what design can do and what value design might bring to their organizations. Everyone knows what to do with an accountant or a doctor, but what to do with a designer — and how to set them up for success — is not widely understood. How Designers Are Transforming Healthcare! I. Healthcare under Pressure Healthcare systems across the globe are under immense pressure: costs are rising, health budgets are diminishing, and populations are ageing, with more chronic and complex health problems, and growing care disparities for vulnerable and marginalized populations II. Potential At the same time, there is an under-utilisation of primary care combined with high levels of system fragmentation—and technology is still not being used to its full potential III. Fresh Thinking There is an urgent need for a fresh approach, for different thinking that improves health outcomes and ensures the sustainability of our health system. IV.
