What people see is just the tip of the iceberg. The nature of our work as motion designers is that we get paid for an end product — polished, as close to flawless as we can manage. But what we spend most of our time doing is grappling with challenges — technical, creative, psychological. The process is often a roller coaster of emotion, riding waves of excitement and fear. Not knowing if our work will make the grade. So much work is thrown away. Even the stuff that makes the cut is rarely exposed for more than a few short weeks before being buried under the flood of novelty. -- This is some process from the Huawei Wisdom spot done with Tendril Studio in 2020. We started the project with a high concept. We dived deep into ideas like evolution and the nature of life, using themes of rotation and duplication as a metaphor for our ever-changing universe. Hours of research and development went into environmental details and effects that most people will never have noticed. All those highs and lows of inspiration and frustration are swept away as we focus on "getting the job done". But I don't think this work is really about the end product. It's about the discoveries we make along the way. By celebrating the small wins, moments of inspiration and wonder, we feel less like we are riding a knife-edge of success or failure.

I told a colleague the other day that it's a constant battle as motion designers. The technical side of things constantly blocks the ideas and inspiration you have. The first phase of the project where you don't figure it out completey is messing with your psyche. And the pressure to create stunning work, even if it only shows for a second, is intense.

Hey Tom, you just put into words so fluidly, what it has felt like from day one as a motion artist. Thank you so much for this expression as now it is said. And the work and process is really beautiful. Especially the learning and exploration that came out of the process... i think that has always been the reason that intrigued me about motion as a medium as well.

The curse of the motion designer is that the most beautiful things you make get about 1s of screen time

Tendril studios always deliver top notch pieces that amaze me as a 3d generalist, I really love this one, really connects me to the efforts connected all together seamlessly. Love it!

Facts! Most people only see the polished tip, but overlook the countless hours of experimentation and the emotional rollercoaster behind the scenes that make the final product what it is.
