From Chapter 1, in my book: The 9 Keys to Leadership Available at: https://lnkd.in/ep9EpeFC Key number 1 is Vision. · Vision can be defined as; a picture of what success will look like at a particular time in the future. The vision articulates where you (and your team) are going. People often get confused between a manager and a leader. A manager runs the business on a day-to-day basis. A leader exhibits an incredibly positive attitude as to where the business is going, envisions the future, and leads the organization to it. These are the companies that become extraordinary. They become extraordinary by taking chances and risks. Failing to embrace the vision or the change needed to realize it is not an option. Albert Bourla of Pfizer reminds his entire company of their vision by putting pictures of patients on the walls. He wants to continually remind people of the real mission of Pfizer. He wants metrics that express how many patients have been helped, not merely in terms of dollars and cents. And what happens when leaders inside the company don’t share the same vision? In order to succeed, someone has to sometimes make difficult decisions. If employees at any level have turned toxic when it comes to the organization and its success, it may be time to make a change. The success of the vision will depend on it. Remedy Analytics founder Scott Martin was forced to make the difficult decision to ask two key executives to leave because of their lack of commitment to the vision. The result was an immediate upturn in morale and productivity that continues to this day. It’s important to communicate frequently with employees who have bought in to the vision. If they are invested, they want to know. Where are we in relation to our goals? Where are we going with our strategy? They want to know what success looks like. You need to share a sense of urgency and can describe what success looks like. Make this description so clear that it’s extremely easy to see who isn’t on board. If those individuals don’t share the vision, they are going to have to go. Their mission then is to find an organization in which they fit. After the organization shares the vision and goals, each department should work on identifying action steps they will need to accomplish, action steps that support the overall vision and goals. Each department will want to look at setting their own goals and the strategies and tactics to achieve them. Ultimately, these planning sessions will lead to action plans making next steps very clear and measurable. Assign objective measurements to the goals and strategies. Objective measurements are just that – clearly measurable without personal feelings or opinions. Many a leader has gotten in trouble by announcing subjective measurements and their impression of results versus data driven objective results. Subjective measurements always lead to confusion.
