If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room! Have you ever found yourself in a room where you felt you were the smartest person out there? A room where people look up to you and reach out to you for answers! Well, that's a very validating experience for sure, but what if I told you that being the smartest in the room could be holding you back? When you are consistently surrounded by individuals who possess less knowledge or expertise, you will presumably slip into a pompous and know-it-all mentality. This can inadvertently lead to stagnant personal growth, as we get comfortable and acquainted with the idea that we are the best out there until we finally meet people who challenge this mindset as well as our egos. Having a know-it-all mentality keeps you in an illusion, limits a lot of potential opportunities, and eventually instills negative traits in you like arrogance. While it is significant to acknowledge your efforts and give yourself credit, it is essential to remember that to grow exponentially we need to broaden our horizons and should not get comfortable with the bare minimum outcomes or success. There is a very famous aphorism in Tamil that is translated into English as "What you have learned is hand soil size and what you haven't learned is world size." this aphorism has always kept me grounded and curious. So, in the end, I just have one thing to highlight and that is Kab tak rahoge Chote se kuve Ke rockstar aim for big things in life, celebrate your milestones but don't get comfortable with it, Chase humility in life, be open to learning and get rid of the know-it-all mentality because there is still a lot of learning and experiences to unpack. In today's world of "Internet Instruction" it has become very easy for ANYONE to declare themselves as a COACH who can get results for their clients. Just look at your feeds... Social media is loaded with these so called "Coaches" who are ready and eager to take your money. The challenge is that many, if not most of these "New World Coaches" have no idea how to help their clients develop SKILLS. What most of them sell is what I call "Content Hacks". Meaning they have content and most of the content is good if not great stuff! But they have no idea how to coach the client to use the STUFF skillfully to create true ongoing success. This is a problem...so just know that true Coaches help and lead others to develop the skills required to win the game. They don't just teach the playbook...they train, develop, and lead their players to win by developing their skills, their instincts, and their desire to WIN! Just research the career of the best Coach I have ever known...Coach Mike Michele Cronin or talk to ANY of his past players, and you will find exactly what I'm talking about. Don’t spend time doing things that aren’t helping you achieve your potential. What should you be doing, then? ⏳ Almost 9 years ago, I had a conversation with my first COO—who, in the context of my school, was the principal. His name was Gustavo, a brilliant educator with a background in religion and a focus on philosophy. We were discussing the concept of innate talent in our students. I explained my idea that everyone has ceilings in life—some high, some low—depending on the individual and the area of focus. I wanted Gustavo to understand my perspective on talent and potential, which, although evolved, remains rooted in the same principle. This perspective has proven successful for myself, our community, and our team over the years. I spoke about ceilings as a metaphor 🏘️ The crucial aspect of my notion of potential isn’t the ceiling itself, but the space between the ceiling and the floor. Sure, the ceiling gives a rough estimate of our limits, which is useful for reference. But we are human. I firmly believe that if we reach a ceiling and keep pushing, we will move it forward. After I finished speaking, Gustavo shared a concept he’d learned in school: the Moral Budget. (I took inspiration from the budget idea.) We started toying with the idea: “What if we all had a specific budget assigned to each area of our lives, which would only be spent as we grow in that particular area? Essentially, paying to develop our potential.” What would happen, I wondered, if the budget ran out? With time, I realized the same principle applies here. We are human. We'll find a way to get more budget. That way, we can continue to improve and develop our potential to new heights. A former colleague, Jack, had extensive experience. He was a true pioneer in his niche. But he struggled to keep up with trends & new tech. The same strategies that once brought him success eventually were no longer effective. Why? Jack became too comfortable in his expertise and stopped seeking knowledge. He continued to rely on the tried-and-true, even though those methods were no longer enough. A new hire entered the picture and made some recommendations that totally revolutionized our workflows. When I was in college, I attended a seminar and the speaker shared an unforgettable piece of advice that influenced who I am today. I was just starting to get interested in personal development, and had been running myself ragged trying to achieve a better version of myself. But, like most beginners, I was making a lot of mistakes: 1. Easily distracted by something new 2. Always comparing myself with others, 3. Having difficulty with consistency Until one day, this speaker said to me: "Every master was once a disaster" That day, my whole life changed. I realized that it is common for all beginners to get distracted, to compare and be inconsistent. The greats we all know went through the same process. The most important thing is to keep on going until you find or create the ideal pacing, environment, style, support and tools to help you navigate and push through in your growth journey.
