I've often questioned whether I should add an SHRM certification to my resume. My hesitation came from the financial investment and why the certification was necessary. Reflecting on my past few years, I do see how the certification could have increased my chances for jobs in HR. Now, however, I no longer see the benefit.
As I search for my next opportunity, I find resources like PeakHR and Hacking HR much more valuable. Also, in light of the recent decision by SHRM to drop E, I believe these two organizations are better leaders in the field of HR and People Operations. I find their resources to be more valuable, accessible, and applicable.
I've spent the majority of my career HR-adjacent - managing diverse teams, overseeing hiring, interviewing, onboarding, completing performance reviews, and developing employee handbooks. If I haven't had an HR department to guide me, I've researched employment law myself. If I learned anything from working in Aquatics, it's how to research and read state and local laws and regulations. 😉
I welcome opportunities in HR and People Ops where experience with HR is required but a certification is not.
Congratulations and welcome to the IHRP family.
