Harsh truth: “Good enough” in live broadcast productions is NOT good enough.  Let me explain. During the pandemic, we saw a rise in cloud-based productions that addressed the limitations of social distancing. These cloud workflows were great for enabling broadcasters large and small to continue to cover live events like news and sports. This has fueled the industry to want to move more production to the cloud. But, we've been leaving something fundamental out of the discussion: There are just some types of broadcast productions—like live sports, for example—where “good enough” quality just won’t cut it. In live sports, we’ve grown accustomed to the “essentials” like graphics and replay that make the game, race, or match a more exciting watch. We also expect to see every single second of the event. But as a sports lover, would you continue to watch these events without the level of production we’re used to? And do you think the next generation of fans will feel the same? As an advertiser, these are serious considerations. NAB Show Preview: Remote production increasing with rise in streamers, content demand - NewscastStudio   The ability to produce more for less has accelerated the broadcast industry’s move to remote production. Whole swathes of workflows for live events and beyond are moving to the cloud retaining the quality that viewer’s expect. As the article points out there are now many reasons to move to cloud based contribution and playout, not least advantages of scalability and agility, regardless of the size of the event. I agree with Thomas Buffolano of The Switch that it is smaller sports organizations that can benefit too. Sports fans want to be able to watch the smaller tournaments and lower-league events as much as the international spectaculars. The agile and streamlined workflows of a remote production bring that into the realms of possibility for many existing broadcasters – as well as the new-generation streamers, for whom costs are likely to be even more critical.
