COLD OPEN: “There just isn’t enough time.” TITLE SEQUENCE: BrandDOPE is back up. Plus, a journey to Ozone, one of the nation's biggest cannabis brands. ARTICLE BEGINS: I started a newsletter about cannabis brands & marketing, and it was getting traction. There was no real monetization path, but that’s ok. The work was largely a creative exercise; it kept me current, catalyzed good thinking in my other work, and reconnected me with some great people  But the math wasn’t mathing. But between research and writing, articles took well over twelve hours apiece. I had consulting gigs, startup responsibilities, prospecting, maybe a health issue, definitely a demanding dog, and oh, yeah: a family. “There just isn’t enough time,” I pissed and moaned. The newsletter had to slide. But it gnawed at me. I mulled. And as is often the case, the unlock ended up coming from the barrier itself. I didn’t have enough time to dive deep into these brands. Really good take here. No hook, just the facts ma’am w Ozone. And that’s not enough to bring people in or keep them in. What I have been finding is that email from growers and dispos are getting more and more creative and compelling. (I could do a whole deep dive on that… lol) At least that’s what I am seeing in my inbox from MA. Since the NY industry is still quite disappointing and frankly more expensive than MA in almost all form factors, I am way more versed in that geo than in my own state. Key here is getting enough awareness and differentiation so that folks will opt in to your emails. You’re the genius here Todd Lowe, I know what makes ME opt in, but maybe there are some fab reccos from your brain to elicit this action? I know your freaky greatness has an over abundance of ideas my dude! I know, I know… Email, schmeemail, yeah. Old school. BUT IT STILL WORKS. And until things loosen up on the social platforms, keep playing there, but spend the time to really understand your email marketing and really hone in on your differing nurtures. Do I wish we could really do great long and short form video or vlogs that could actually be seen easily? Of course. But we aren’t there yet.
