About 1 year ago, one of the biggest and worst data breaches which has ever happened in Estonia was publicly disclosed. The data breach concerns highly sensitive #data, including #healthdata and #geneticdata.
Namely, in November 2023, around 100 000 copies of different files containing personal and health data of around 10 000 people were illegally downloaded from the database of the Estonian genetic testing company Asper Biogene.
Today, new information has been published about the data breach and the status of its investigation.
It is reported in the media that on the basis of the evidence gathered so far in the criminal proceedings, there are grounds to suspect that the access and downloading of data from the company's database was a planned and organised activity. The Central Criminal Police suspects a four-member group led by a Russian national, who the police, in cooperation with the State Prosecutor's Office, have declared wanted internationally, of stealing data from the genetic testing company.
Estonian police explains that the criminal group's activities were characterised by a specialised division of roles, with each member suspected of having a specific task in carrying out the data theft - from finding #security holes in the computer system to claiming #ransom for the stolen data.
So far, no new information and comments have been given about the data breach by the Estonian Andmekaitse Inspektsioon | Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate that is also dealing with the matter.
