🌱 Lack of “Locomotives” Leading High-Tech Agricultural Enterprises Vietnam currently has only about 50 enterprises recognized as “high-tech agricultural enterprises” and fewer than 300 agricultural enterprises applying high technology. These numbers are modest given the need for Vietnamese agricultural products to increase value in the international market. 🚜 Challenges Faced At the 2024 Agricultural Forum, Mr. Dang Kim Son, Permanent Vice President of the Association of High-Tech Agricultural Enterprises, highlighted that the main force in Vietnam’s agricultural production consists of around 10 million small-scale farming households and several million agricultural business households. However, less than 3% of the total number of agricultural enterprises apply high technology. Mr. Ngo Minh Hai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TH Group, emphasized the benefits of applying high technology in agriculture, citing TH true MILK's advanced technological investments that have led to a production capacity of 1 million liters/day, a record in the dairy industry. 📈 Case Studies According to Thaco Agri’s Q2 2024 financial report, the company’s profit after tax in the first 6 months of 2024 reached nearly 4.9 billion VND, reversing a loss of nearly 383 billion VND from the same period last year. Thaco Agri has a large-scale agricultural investment strategy over 84,000 hectares in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, aiming to significantly increase outputs of bananas, rubber latex, cows, and pigs. Mr. Tran Ba Duong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thaco, emphasized the need for integrated circulation in agricultural production, covering construction, machinery, industry, investment, human resources, and organizational structures. 🌾 Barriers for Smaller Enterprises Despite the successes of large corporations, most Vietnamese agricultural enterprises are small and micro-sized, often cooperatives or households. They face numerous challenges such as: ▪ Lack of land for large-scale production ▪ Insufficient capital for investment ▪ Lack of support from research institutions ▪ Limited access to information and technology ▪ Scarcity of qualified consultants Meanwhile, international markets are imposing increasingly stringent demands on imported agricultural products. 📊 #Agriculture #HighTech #Innovation #VietnamAgriculture #BusinessGrowth #Sustainability #Agribusiness #TechInAgriculture #TradeInt #BKE #BrianKnowExim

In the USD 140 Bn Indonesian agriculture market – What differentiates the laggards from the leaders? Following up from our previous #Agritech post, let’s look at the factors and dimensions that are at play in Agritech along with the typical approach adopted by the successful player: 🌾Aim for full stack offerings as a long-term goal with financing being a part of it. 🍌Focus on select crops and develop capabilities within that sphere before pivoting to other crops. 🚚 B2B (supplying output products to Horeca, export houses, and processing centers) is more profitable compared to the simple B2C farm-to-fork model. 🚢Export and private label are also more margin additive and good to have in the product portfolio. Kakuzi Plc, a Kenyan agribusiness firm, has announced a KSh100 million investment plan for 2025 focused on advancing agricultural technology and enhancing sustainability practices. The investment, approved by shareholders, aims to position Kakuzi at the forefront of climate-smart agriculture and sustainable business practices. Chris Flowers, Kakuzi's Managing Director, emphasized the importance of market diversification for the company's future, targeting both export and domestic markets. The investment will target several key areas, including agricultural technology (Ag-Tech), water stewardship, carbon emissions reduction, and waste minimization. Kakuzi also plans to explore the introduction of new commercial crops such as blueberries and expand its livestock range. The company's product portfolio, which includes avocado and macadamia, is set to expand, with plans to reach global markets in Europe, China, India, the Middle East, and the U.S. Kakuzi acknowledges the challenges posed by complex global logistics, particularly due to the closure of Red Sea shipping routes, and the unpredictable effects of climate change on agriculture.
