This morning, after exactly 14 months, Polaris Inc. and I shook hands and parted friends. Layoffs are an unfortunate part of the corporate world and as one of the more recent hires, I got caught up in the latest wave. Notwithstanding, and without facetiousness or empty platitudes, I can say that I truly am grateful for my time at the company. As a car guy who nonetheless did not possess a great knowledge of the powersports and motorcycle industry prior to joining, I enjoyed the environment in which there was something to learn literally every single day, as well as a friendly face around every office corner. And, hey, what other job lets you take a Batmobile home for a night or two? Back on the market, I am looking for a new challenge in a company and on a team that takes a collaborative, strategic and maybe occasionally unconventional approach to solving customer pain points. (After all, I am the guy who, a dozen years ago, used OKCupid as a marketing research mechanism.) I am a firm believer in the data-driven approach to marketing that leaves room for creativity, personality, and an individual touch. I am thrilled to announce that I am reentering my career in product management after spending three wonderful years at home with my children. In February, my husband faced lay-offs at his firm, a situation that many of you have also experienced. It was a tough blow for us, but ultimately it lead us to a reflect and reevaluate of our family's direction and aspirations. While change is always within our control, sometimes it takes an unexpected event to push us to reassess and take charge of our path. We wouldn't have chosen a lay-off and period of unemployment, but, for us, it served as a wake-up call to break free from complacency and regain control of our journey. I know this is an incredibly challenging time for job-seekers. But, none-the-less, I am excited to be back. Believe me, with 3 toddlers at home, I don’t know the the meaning of the word quit.
