Consequently, we should not just evaluate if we do the things 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, but whether we’re doing the right 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴. Two McKinsey surveys on GenAI in healthcare, conducted in December 2023 and March 2024, show a trend toward pharma companies implementing AI solutions. In the 2024 survey, most respondents answered that their organization is either already using GenAI tools or is still testing them out. Some are still in the proof-of-concept stage. The portion of respondents without any plans for GenAI has considerably reduced from 4% to 2% from 2023 to 2024.

👉 The FDA's new Digital Health & Artificial Intelligence Glossary drives "a stake in the ground" upon which the agency can “build frameworks and industry guidance documents, among other regulatory and policy items related to AI and digital health,” says industry expert Vizma Carver, who in 2018 advised FDA staff and leaders as a Digital Health Expert. Two glossary terms in particular – “digital twin” and “federated learning” – caught Carver’s eye. She surmises that manufacturers will find the agency’s definitions of these terms to be helpful. “When it comes to digital twin, that conversation has gone around and around for a very, very long time,” she tells me. “What’s really important to the FDA is the bidirectional interaction of the virtual model and the physical twin. So it’s bidirectional, instead of, you create it, and then that digital twin is off on its own. 🤖 Is the pharmaceutical industry lagging behind??💡 Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending The Why, the Wow, and the Well of AI in Healthcare at Living Tomorrow, organized by CIBH in collaboration with Roularta HealthCare My key takeaways: 1️⃣ 🤖 From the potential of AI in diagnostics and patient-centric care to the ethical questions of bias and mental health applications, the discussions highlighted how critical technology will be in addressing healthcare challenges—particularly with a shrinking population and increasing demand for care. “The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it, and execute it. It isn’t something you await, but rather create…” – Tom Braekeleirs. 2️⃣ 😱 A confronting truth: Covid-19 drove the digital transformation… unfortunately, not us, marketeers, nor CEOs aiming to lead change in companies. 3️⃣ ❣️ HCPs are human, and love to interact with a wide range of patients. They would appreciate AI to reduce administrative burdens, but don’t limit them to treating only severe cases—this could lead to burnout. 4️⃣ 😅 The panel ended with an interesting contrast in perspectives: healthcare practitioners focusing on sickness, commercial partners emphasizing prevention, and patients calling for better and earlier diagnoses.
