I really enjoyed reading this wrap-up article from Ragan's internal comms conference (I think a lot of people are posting about this :)) about Microsoft's Chief Comms Officer, Frank Shaw's thoughts on AI. What I especially liked was the graphic, which clearly illustrates the journey of an internal comms campaign, with sprinkles of how AI can help us, of course. I personally love using AI as a brainstorming buddy. One thing that sparked some curiosity in me was Shaw noting that AI can help employees feel better about their job performance through streamlining their sense of productivity and sense of satisfaction at work. That's something I'm interested in. I agree that AI does bring in efficiency but do we really think that AI can help improve employee engagement? What are your thoughts?

It's ok to bring internal comms back to the 'simple things' - that's my takeaway from #simplyIC. Shelley Kingsnorth and Laurel Dzneladze reminded me that you can achieve great things when you're trusted and empowered. Internal comms doesn't have to be flashy, just based on listening to your employees and providing channels they'll use and comms they need. What struck me most from Ben Elder's session is that when your employees start using your business comms channel as an internal social media channel and scroll endlessly to see what's going on, then they're not being productive. Remember that your comms channels are there to improve productivity first and foremost. Kate Isichei, John Clegg, Kimberley-Marie Sklinar, Sascha Evans and Peter Brogan shared so many insights in their panel on enabling neurodivergent workers to succeed. "Neurodiversity is a celebration that all ways of thinking of valid and celebrated" "The most important thing, over pay, is feeling that you belong. A good culture really does help. Leaders amplify the culture. It really starts with them." There are so many simple steps we can all take daily to create a sense of belonging for everyone. Things like simply reviewing and standardising meeting practice and ensuring every meeting has clear goals, objectives, agendas, and the good old don't call an unexpected meeting without explaining what it's about. Emojis are tough for screen readers to process and capitals are hard for some people to process, so limit using them - this opened up a discussion about how LinkedIn really needs to improve the functionality on posts. And of course, #AI was a key theme with Sonya Poonian, Ben W., Kerry McInerney, David Burnand and Siobhan Boorer highlighting that it's at the peak of the hype curve but true adoption will take some time yet. As you figure out how you're company is going to adopt it make sure you: - Form a cross functional team of IT, HR, L&D, compliance and IC to lead its integration. - Have a clear use case for AI before you start. - Consider legal, compliance and sustainability. - Always allow for human intervention. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting LinkedIn friends for the first time - Tom Gater, Eduvie Martin, Rich Hinchelwood. Lunch Breaks are Back Thanks to AI We internal comms pros are busy. There are the strategic things we're promoting at any given time, the everyday content that keeps employees engaged, the seasonal events and recognitions, the HR-related need-to-know stuff, the occasional crisis, and those random must-haves that come to us from all directions and wreak havoc on our to-do list. It's a miracle if we have time for lunch. Enter AI, which promises to save the day while also stirring up a good dose of doomsday handwringing. But what if we just embrace AI as a nifty little tool that can help us with some of the more mundane parts of our job, freeing up time for what we do best - connecting employees with the culture, the company, the community, and each other? Check out the "Dream State" chart in this article, from Microsoft's Frank X. Shaw - it outlines how we IC pros can tap into AI to help with all those things we know we need to do, but often end up at the bottom of our list. As much as the left side of my brain loves to compile a good metrics report, for example, I'd rather be engaging my right hemisphere in coming up with some killer ideas for a new campaign. And why not put our AI friend in charge of going through stakeholder comments and revising the content? You can even ask AI to help create a compelling headline (I may have gotten some ideas for mine from Copilot). I'm all for it. And no, I'm not afraid AI will take my job (and not just because I'm currently looking for work). It'll change my job, boosting my superpowers by allowing me to focus more on the human stuff that it can't replace (at least not yet 😐). And maybe even free up some time to decompress with a good book while I eat my salad.

Internal comms has a way of escaping the building. A company’s #internal #communications rely on relationships with its people and focus on what’s happening inside. The reality is, internal communications don't just stay within company walls. This makes it a critical part of #corporate communications and #public #affairs. Employees naturally share work experiences in social media and conversations, which shapes the company’s external image. Internal comms, when done well, drives brand perception and turn employees into brand ambassadors. Transparent, consistent messaging builds internal trust, helping prevent rumors that could leak and harm public perception. Unified internal comms creates a strong, shared culture, giving employees a sense of purpose they’re proud to represent beyond the company. Strong internal communication is more than just a tool for engagement—it is a key driver of #brand perception, inside and outside. I suggest no matter your size as a company, never overlook the importance of internal comms! 📷: OpenAI. (2024). ChatGPT [Large language model].
