We recently worked with a client exploring a partnership opportunity with a well-known brand. The CEO was understandably excited about the chance to align their lesser-known name with a household one. But we had to play the role of the buzzkill, pointing out several red flags. Two weeks ago, we attended a panel discussion about partnerships where Amelia DeSorrento nailed it, highlighting two essential questions every company should ask upfront: 1. Are our goals aligned? 2. What do we each have at stake? That second question is often overlooked, especially when there’s a power imbalance. Startups might shy away from asking larger partners to share the risk. But if the bigger company has no money, resources, or reputation on the line, can you be sure their goals are truly aligned with yours? Our advice to that client focused first on getting crystal clear about their own goals (question #1). The next step was ensuring that the potential partner would invest enough to make those goals achievable (question #2). And, of course, we made sure they went into that meeting with both elements clearly laid out. At the end of the day, a successful partnership requires both sides to have some skin in the game.
