Apple and Rolex   Did the Apple Watch ignite a renewed fascination with watches? A look at Google Trends indicates that since the launch of the Apple Watch, online interest in Rolex has been elevated. This sparked my curiosity for latest column in BILANZ Wirtschaftsmagazin: the unexpected synergy between Apple and Rolex. While both brands represent different realms – tech and tradition – their shared impact on the watch market is undeniable. It’s not about competition for me; it’s how they lifted the entire category into the mainstream. You can find my article in the comments.

I think it’s more correlation rather than causality. In my opinion the main reason for the increase in interest in Rolex is social media: there’s much more content and information about Rolex available, influencers show and discuss their watches and even regular people want to show off their Rolex online

Does not the sudden rise in interest in the Apple Watch coincide with the coronavirus pandemic? During the same period, for example, interest in bicycles also increased as most gyms were closed and social interactions on a physical level were severely restricted. So people were suddenly interested in sports equipment that allowed them to exercise alone in the fresh air - which also includes smart watches, such as the Apple Watch. I agree with Dr. Teo Pham that the rise in interest in the Apple Watch and the simultaneous rise in interest in Rolex watches is more of a correlation than a causality. Social media and money that, during the pandemic, was suddenly invested in personal luxury goods instead of vacations or other social and cultural experiences play a much more decisive role in my opinion.

It’s because Apple Watch users become so productive that they all get super rich super fast and buy a Rolex.

I've always said that my smart watch tells me about me and my real watch tells other about me. Smart watches are a tool. while I like them to last as long as possible, I won't be leaving my son one when I pass, I'll be leaving him the Explorer haha.

Jean-Claude Biver predicted just that (for luxury watches in general) from the very beginning when the Apple watch was launched.
