Preparedness vs Readiness is an interesting topic that was briefly explored/mentioned in a podcast I listened to today on Disaster Tough Podcast. Though the two words get used interchangeably there is a vast difference in their meaning and especially the intended action to be taken. Emergency Preparedness vs Emergency Readiness: Emergency preparedness is the act of collecting the intelligence, doing the risk analysis, creating SOP's and immediate action plans. Following that required logistics and systems can be purchased and installed as needed. Preparedness will include assessing training needs and delivering training as required as well as running scenarios to assess the plans and training. Emergency Readiness indicates that everything is in place ready to deploy the appropriate action or reaction to gain control and/or minimise impact of an emergency or incident. Readiness can only occur after preparedness has been completed and assessed and found to function as required and only then can one be ready to act.
