https://lnkd.in/egnEPPFE A huge amount of work over many years from lots of people has got us to this point. The UK SAF mandate will come into force in 2025, with the details published today, whilst the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom is also unveiling its consultation into a SAF revenue certainty mechanism. The mandate will be the key driver of demand for SAF between now and 2040, accompanied by a RCM that will help to accelerate domestic supply of SAF and make compliance with the mandate easier. This is not the end of the journey. Whilst the changes to the HEFA cap are extremely welcome and we thank Ministers for listening, Govt will need to keep a very careful eye on the buy-out price to ensure we are not hitting consumers with disproportionate price rises, using its review mechanism where necessary. It is an undeniable fact too that SAF will be more expensive in the UK than the EU, owing to the support on offer for EU airlines to mitigate the price gap between SAF and kerasine. We now need to see similar support being introduced here. On the RCM, there is still a disconnect between the commitment to having 5 plants under construction by 2025 and current Govt plans to introduce the scheme in 2026. This needs to be addressed, with legislation being introduced no later than the next Kings Speech, following a decision on the scheme design by the end of the year. Airlines support a mandate as a key step in the carbon transition as SAF will be one of the important technologies to achieve our net zero commitments. The alternative to decarbonising is a smaller sector and less choice for passengers. But it must be achieved in a way that keeps UK aviation competitive as we move along that journey and doesn’t leave us exposed to more generous support being offered elsewhere. #airlines #airports #aviation #travel #tourism #aerospace #netzero Department for Business and Trade Anthony Browne Dr Rannia Leontaridi OBE David Silk Holly Greig Debbie Stockwell Claire Swadkin Megan Trethewey Richard Coates Jonathon Counsell Matthew Gorman Andy Jefferson PhD, BSc (Hons) Emma Gilthorpe Rachel Gardner-Poole Graeme Elliott Chris Grayling Henry Smith Graham Brady Peter Lyburn Cathy Mussert Angus Boobbyer Joshua Buckland Richard Moriarty Leigh Hudson Gaynor Hartnell Chris Rumfitt Rob Jeffery

Aviation fuel plan supports growth of British aviation sector Measures announced to give UK aviation and the SAF industry the certainty to keep creating skilled British jobs while ensuring air travel is fit for the future. The government has confirmed new targets today (25 April 2024) to ensure 10% of all jet fuel in flights taking off from the UK comes from sustainable sources by 2030 through its Sustainable aviation fuel mandate. The UK’s SAF mandate, which, subject to parliamentary approval, which will come into force in January 2025, will be one of the first in the world to be put into law, once again putting the UK at the forefront of decarbonising air travel. It follows the world’s first commercial 100% SAF transatlantic flight taking off from Heathrow in November – backed by up to £1 million in government investment. https://hubs.li/Q02v5_BN0 #aviation #jobs #careers #aviationjobs #aviationcareers #aviationindustry #hiring #jobopportunity #airlines #airports #airlinejobs #airportjobs

Last week the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom made a critical announcement on how the Government will help scale up a domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) market in the UK. Plans include a much-called-for UK SAF mandate, which will come into force in 2025 and will legislate for 10% SAF usage by 2030, and a consultation on options for a SAF revenue certainty mechanism. With low production volumes and the high cost of SAF as a barrier to its use and scale-up domestically, we are pleased to see measures that help produce SAF at scale in the UK. Now, we urge the Government to deliver the revenue mechanism scheme at pace so a SAF industry in the UK can take off. UK Government confirms 10% SAF target for aviation fuels by 2030. The measures announced by the department of Transportation are to give UK aviation and the SAF industry the certainty to keep creating skilled British jobs while ensuring air travel is fit for the future. This is part of the government’s plan to deliver on our net zero commitments while ensuring we take a pragmatic and proportionate approach, which minimises unnecessary burdens on the public. Key Points: - plans unveiled for world leading sustainable aviation fuel mandate, with 10% of all jet fuel set to go green by 2030 - SAF industry estimated to boost the economy by £1.8 billion and create more than 10,000 jobs across the UK by 2030 - forms part of UK’s world-leading commitment to cut emissions while minimising impact on consumers Read more: https://lnkd.in/gC5M_veF #SAF #UKGov #energytransition #aviation #sustainableaviation

✈️ We’ve published the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate, our plan to help passengers to keep travelling how they want while protecting the environment. The SAF industry is expected to generate more than £1.8 billion to the UK economy by 2030, creating thousands of skilled jobs. The mandate includes: ✅ New targets for SAF, with 10% of jet fuel set to go green by 2030 ✅ Incentives for suppliers to provide SAF to the UK ✅ Powers to prevent higher prices 📄 We’ve also launched a consultation on the SAF revenue certainty scheme, to help guarantee revenue and encourage further investors to the UK. As the conversation around Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) continues, it raises questions about the feasibility and implications of shifting short-haul flights to rail alternatives, much like France's initiative. It's clear that significant infrastructure upgrades would be necessary for such a transition to be effective in the UK. A comprehensive approach that includes investment in rail as well as aviation will be critical.
With the UK keen on decarbonising aviation through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), discussions arise about potentially mirroring France's approach to banning short-haul flights that could be accomplished by train in under 2.5 hours. The idea is gaining traction as can be seen from a recent parliamentary exchange. The reality of implementing such a ban is however complex. A key challenge will be whether the existing rail system can accommodate the increased demand. Although the UK has an extensive rail network, significant infrastructure improvements are still needed to handle a potential shift from air to rail effectively - at the moment this investment is not forthcoming. Whilst the aviation sector is under pressure to reduce emissions, the only realistic way will be a more comprehensive approach and providing the investment required in both rail and aviation. #Aviation #Sustainability #RailInfrastructure #GreenTravel #UKRail #Decarbonisation https://lnkd.in/eCywC_yR

The talk about who will pay the price premium for SAF is so often focused on individual airline customers, but there's another approach to decarbonizing aviation besides raising ticket prices to cover the cost of SAF: insetting. Insets enable companies with significant Scope 3 aviation emissions (i.e. those that ship their people or products around the globe via plane) to decarbonize flights from anywhere to anywhere and they are the key to expanding the SAF market. https://lnkd.in/eyWShdym
