Behind the veil of neglect, a deliberate campaign of plunder and destruction has robbed Khetri of its historic treasures. The State government's betrayal of Khetri's cultural legacy knows no bounds. Not content with mere neglect, they resorted to systematic looting, stripping the town of its invaluable artifacts and relics. And when all that could be looted was gone, they resorted to the unthinkable — setting fire to our heritage, hoping to erase all evidence of their heinous deeds. The fires that ravaged Khetri's palaces were not accidents but calculated acts of cultural vandalism. In their greed and indifference, the State government sacrificed our shared heritage at the altar of apathy, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. As custodians of our nation's cultural heritage, we cannot let this betrayal go unnoticed. We must demand answers, accountability, and justice for Khetri. The Married Women of this Village Kept the Pond Alive Nearly 150 years ago, after the #Sone Canal system was developed in the #Shahabad and #Magadh regions of Bihar, there was no longer a scarcity of water. Under this canal system, several canals were constructed, including the #Ara Line (84.80 km), Gara Chaube (61 km), #Buxar Line (69.86 km), #Dumraon Line (64.6 km), and the Son High-Level Canal (68 km), along with the #Kargahar, #Bhojpur, and #Koilwar distributaries. Initially, this canal system provided irrigation to an area of 800,000 hectares. It is said that to suppress the rebellion of #1857, #British military officer Colonel D.H. Dickens had recommended the establishment of the Son Canal in 1853. After the canal was built, 75% of the then #Shahabad district, 11% of #Gaya district, and 14% of #Patna district were irrigated. With this, there was no longer a need for wells and ponds for irrigation. #Ponds and wells became essential for #drinking water and other domestic needs. People not only built these ponds but also ensured they remained alive. #Folk songs from #Rohtas district suggest that ponds and wells became integral parts of families during auspicious events. These water bodies were treated as family members during important occasions. Even today, ponds and wells are used in weddings, birth ceremonies, #Mundan (head-shaving rituals), and Janeu Sanskar (sacred thread) ceremonies. In fact, these water sources play a significant role in keeping traditions alive and preserving folk culture, and it is the village’s married women who have taken on this responsibility.
