Book proposals were created as a tool for literary agents and editors in publishing houses. Instead of reading the thousands of manuscripts that pile on their desks (digitally these days, but even so), they can get a taste of the project through this overview document. It’s a little like a book-buyer reading the back cover copy or the first paragraph of a book before deciding to purchase it. However, agents and editors are making more than a personal decision to engage with the manuscript: it’s commercial. Because I was an acquiring editor for some years, I knew that no matter how much I fell in love with an author’s writing, I was going to have to present their book concept to a boardroom full of my colleagues in marketing and sales. My job was to convince them that we could make money from my selection; that it would be a good fit for our publishing program, or otherwise benefit us. So, picture your proposal in that context. Think of it as shorthand for your book. It is also an expression of your book’s DNA: what makes it unique. To be more hard-nosed, think of it as a pitch, a business plan, a “proof of concept.” It is the one document that will carry the message of your book through the hands of a literary agent to the desk of an acquisitions editor. #EditorialInsights #WriterResources #BookPitching #ManuscriptSubmission #ProposalWriting

Self-publishing a book no longer comes with the stigma it once did. Gone are the days when authors who preferred the creative freedom and flexibility of publishing their works were viewed as "less than" those who landed deals with the Big 5 publishing houses. If you've decided to go this route, one reliable way to boost your credibility is to hire an editor to help you meet the same high standards as traditionally published books. Need help finding or hiring the right editor for your needs? Check out the link to the article in the comments to learn some actionable tips to get you started. If you're a copyeditor or developmental editor available for hire, please drop your info in the comments to help self-published authors connect. Editing your manuscript is an essential step before you can self-publish your book 💯 no debate about it. In the latest episode of Publish & Prosper, we shared a few of our favorite editing insights to help authors get their editing done right, including: 💡 Don’t rely exclusively on self-editing to get your book in shape, but do a round or two of edits on your draft before reaching out to any professional editors. Not only will it cut down on your overall editing costs, but it’s the best way to become a better writer yourself. 💡 Consider the pros and cons of hiring professionals a la carte to edit and design your book or contracting a hybrid publisher for full-service production. Make sure you do your research into the validity of any service provider! 💡 You’ll find a variety of different types of editing and editors out there, but that doesn’t mean you need to use every single one of them to get your book in shape. Consider your options (and your budget) before choosing editorial services that best suit your project. “How big a deal is it if I miss my due date?” a book-coaching client asked a few months back. It turned out to be a huge deal. In the interim between his manuscript due date in the publishing contract and the actual delivery date by this author, the publishing house was acquired by a larger firm. Those manuscripts submitted on time were included in the deal. The authors who’d missed their due date received an email telling them that their contract was void and that they should seek another publisher. And this news turned out to be an even bigger “deal”—as in headache. Authors who miss their deadlines create havoc in the publishing process. Late submissions mean schedule changes for catalog copy, assigned copyeditors, assigned PR specialists, ads, mailings for reviews, and so forth. Only once in releasing 50 books with a major publishing house have I had to warn an editor that I “might” be late. Reason: The sudden death of my father-in-law and an extended trip out of town. I emailed my editor immediately to ask for a 2-week extension on the due date. As it turned out, I didn’t need the extra 2 weeks. Why? Because I always try to take my own advice—expect the unexpected and leave slack in my writing schedule. When the unexpected happens (death in the family, major illness, a natural calamity), communicate early. Any other delay sounds too much like an excuse. Editors hate excuses. How have you handled the unexpected? #authors #writing #books #publishing #deadlines #delays #professionalcommunication #DiannaBooher #BooherBookCamp

There's been a changing of the guard in the publishing industry. So many editors I work with are a decade younger than I am, or more. "The data shows that many writers become first-time authors at midlife and beyond. Your lived experience is your expertise. This is especially true for older people with rich life experiences to draw from and wisdom to share with others." Lucinda Halpern's article and book are important resources for any author, of any age, who is considering traditional publishing. #passionandpurpose #books #womenfounders #lovemywork
