As is classic on the #weekend, I look at topics with a broader scope than usual, but they are strictly connected to what is happening in tech. 🔍 The article captured my attention was published by #BusinessInsider on October 18, 2024 and the title itself is self-explanatory:"Meta layoffs are the latest sign that constant job cuts are the new BigTech normal" (https://lnkd.in/dAjBQPi7). 🧮 The author is referring to the recent #trend of recurring layoffs in the tech industry, focusing on #Meta's latest job cuts announced this week: these layoffs affected #Instagram, #RealityLabs, and #WhatsApp, though the exact number of jobs eliminated wasn't specified. Since here you may think about the "it happens" due to technological advancements or other justifications in one way or another, these big tech companies add... but in reality, this event is presented as part of a larger #pattern where big tech companies are moving away from large-scale layoffs to more frequent, smaller cuts. It is exactly a similar pattern to what was discussed just a post ago about the "#PillsOf": side effects, negative results, and compromises... Just slow down. You’re doing just fine. It might be a harsh truth, but slow progress is often better than a sudden rise. What does slow progress teach you? It teaches depth and character. It helps you value your work and your money. I’m not saying you shouldn’t aim high, but it’s important to recognize that not all of us will have a big break in our careers. Not every one will work for big tech companies. Many of us might spend our entire careers with smaller companies or startups, and that’s okay. Personally, I haven’t had any big breaks in my career. The closest I came was when I got a job at Meta, but I was affected by the layoffs. Since then, I’ve been working on other things. This experience taught me to value where I am and do what I can to position myself for future opportunities. The growth we’re often seeking is tied to personal branding—the personal brand we may be avoiding building. People buy stories, and people tell stories. The key is to embrace slow growth and understand that at every point in your career, contentment is key. Contentment is crucial to building a meaningful life and the life you want. Because trust me, when you start earning $5,000 per month, you’ll desire to earn $10,000 more. When you start earning higher, the desire for more only grows. That’s life. The chase for things is endless. That doesn't mean it's easy to get a junior job right now. But if you're already learning to code, don't let stuff like layoffs or rejections discourage you. There will always be companies looking for great developers. The most important part is to focus on: 1. Improving your development skills 2. Standing out during the application process If you can manage these two, it's only a matter of time until you land a coding job - even if that first job might not be at Google or Meta. 🔥

In my view, three key factors lead to this wave of job cuts: 1. Overhiring in Post-Pandemic Times As pandemic restrictions lifted, demand for digital services boomed. Many tech firms aggressively expanded their workforces to keep up. However, when growth stalled in late 2022 amid rising inflation and interest rates, excess workforce capacity got slashed. 2. Ad-Supported Business Model Woes With consumers cutting back on discretionary spending, the squeeze hit ad spending hard. Tech giants dependent on ads like Meta and Snap faced profit crunches. Tighter belts meant heavy cuts like Meta’s 11,000+ layoffs. 3. Recession Preparation Though not formally declared yet, whispers of a looming recession grew loud. Pre-emptive layoffs both reduce costs and send shareholders signs of “austerity”. For cash-rich firms like Amazon, job cuts became the prudent choice to gird for lean times ahead. What’s Next? Though this year’s layoff tally has exceeded 150,000 jobs, tech still holds economic gravity. As macro conditions stabilize and innovation marches on, new opportunities will emerge.
