It’s #biochar. Under a microscope, it looks like a sponge. What is this? These are the remains of a plant that was cooked in an #oxygen-free environment, not burned. This is #carbon that has been absorbed by the plant from the atmosphere and is permanently fixed and inert, meaning the carbon cannot return to the atmosphere. #Biochar has a huge surface area, it can range from around 200 square meters to over 1,000 square meters per gram. It has a negative/positive charge that attracts and binds other elements, including nutrients. It absorbs humidity, 5 to 7 times its volume. It is also inert, meaning it does not react with other elements to create other chemicals. The structure of biochar is an ideal home for microbes, bacteria and fungi, essential for healthy, living soil. Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, converting it to biochar and adding it to the earth can only be a win-win for our food, our environment and our planet.
