Cloudflare's free plan isn't just altruism—it's a brilliant economic strategy that underpins their entire business model. By offering free services to millions of websites, Cloudflare has positioned itself as an indispensable part of the Internet's infrastructure. This approach creates a virtuous cycle: ISPs eagerly peer with Cloudflare to reach its vast network of sites, reducing bandwidth costs. In turn, these partnerships often lead to free colocation, slashing data centre expenses. The sheer scale enabled by free users allows Cloudflare to optimise network utilisation, serving enterprise traffic during peak hours and free traffic in the troughs. But the benefits extend beyond cost savings. Free users provide an unparalleled testing ground for new features, offer invaluable threat intelligence, and even serve as a talent pipeline. They challenge Cloudflare to build more intuitive products, benefiting all customers. Critics might argue that "free" is unsustainable at scale. Cloudflare's approach proves otherwise. By aligning their free offering with their core business model, they've created a powerful flywheel effect that drives growth, innovation, and efficiency. It was not a surprise for me to hear about upselling tactics from service providers, but a recent story from the link below was alarming. The author's business faced severe disruption after being suddenly pressured to upgrade to an expensive($120k/year) plan. When they tried to negotiate the price, their domains were deleted, causing major downtime and loss of customer trust. The main lesson here is that relying on a single provider for critical infrastructure is very risky. My thoughts on how to avoid such situations: 1. Use Multiple DNS Providers: Avoid single points of failure. Consider Gcore authoritative DNS, which has a free tariff plan that allows you to use multiple DNS providers. 2. Use Terraform or OpenTofu for Everything: Maintain clear, version-controlled DNS, CDN, and cloud configurations. 3. Adopt a Multi-CDN Strategy: Distribute traffic across multiple CDNs to enhance reliability and optimize costs. If you have significant traffic, you need to keep all CDNs in your portfolio warmed up. By Tom Warren, The Verge, 28 Oct 2024 "Microsoft is taking its gloves off today. The software giant is accusing Google of being behind what it calls “shadow campaigns” to discredit Microsoft’s cloud business. In a scathing blog post, Microsoft deputy general counsel Rima Alaily reveals that Google is about to launch a new “astroturf” group this week. "“It is designed to discredit Microsoft with competition authorities, and policymakers and mislead the public,” says Alaily. “Google has gone through great lengths to obfuscate its involvement, funding, and control, most notably by recruiting a handful of European cloud providers, to serve as the public face of the new organization. When the group launches, Google, we understand, will likely present itself as a backseat member rather than its leader.” "Google has allegedly hired a lobbying and communications agency in Europe to create this new lobbying organization. Microsoft appears to have learned about the campaign after an unnamed European cloud provider declined to join and tipped off Microsoft. “One of the companies approached, who ultimately declined, told us that the organization will be directed and largely funded by Google for the purpose of attacking Microsoft’s cloud computing business in the European Union and the United Kingdom,” says Alaily. "This new lobbying group comes just weeks after Google filed an antitrust complaint to EU regulators in September. The search giant accused Microsoft of unfair licensing contracts for its Azure cloud services, after Microsoft reached a settlement with an industry group backed by European cloud infrastructure providers who were voicing similar concerns about Microsoft’s licensing practices. "Microsoft alleges that Google tried to derail its settlement with the group, Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe (CISPE), in July. “Google offered CISPE’s members a combination of cash and credits amounting to an eye-popping $500 million to reject the settlement and continue pursuing litigation,” says Alaily. CISPE eventually agreed a deal with Microsoft to withdraw its 2022 EU complaint after the software giant allowed European cloud providers to offer Microsoft’s apps and services on local cloud infrastructure. European Cloud: Microsoft Publicly Accuses Google of Manipulation and Hidden Lobbying The battle between Microsoft and Google in the European #cloud space is escalating. This time, Microsoft is publicly accusing its rival of a covert influence campaign with regulatory authorities in #Europe, but also in the United States. A dangerous game for both companies. Microsoft has taken off the gloves. In a post published on the company’s blog, Rima Alaily, the company’s deputy general counsel, accuses Google of conducting a covert disinformation campaign (“astroturfing”) to distract European and US regulators from the search engine’s scandals. The temperature is rising a notch They claim that Google is funding #lobbying groups, recruiting European cloud providers to convey their messages, and even encouraging certain players to refuse compromises with Microsoft in exchange for financial benefits. “Google has gone to great lengths to conceal its involvement, funding, and control, including by recruiting a handful of European cloud providers to serve as a public front for the new organization,” the executive said. Microsoft cites the example of CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe), a group of European cloud providers that was reportedly pressured by Google to pursue legal action against Microsoft in exchange for $500 million in cash and credits. CISPE declined and settled with Microsoft to resolve the dispute that had been going on for years. The providers accused Microsoft of abusing its #dominantposition by doing everything it could to prevent Azure customers from switching to competitors. At the end of September, Google filed a complaint with the European Commission over Azure's anti-competitive practices. In the complaint, which concerns Microsoft’s licensing practices, Google claims to be acting in the best interests of its European customers. In essence, the search engine claims that it should not pay Microsoft to use Windows Server in its cloud services if customers already own the software for use on their own servers. To which Rima Alaily retorts: “We disagree. When a streaming service, like Netflix or Disney, includes a movie in its catalog, it pays for that right. It does not get a credit or discount if a subscriber already owns the DVD of the same movie. Software and the cloud are no different.” Furthermore, Google is said to have hired a lobbying agency in Europe to manage an organization composed of small cloud providers. When approached, one of them refused and approached Microsoft to reveal the truth: this famous organization, the Open Cloud Coalition, is allegedly led and “primarily funded by Google with the aim of attacking Microsoft’s cloud computing activities in the #EuropeanUnion and the #UnitedKingdom.” Google is said to...
