Interesting analysis about the recent submarine cables cut in NOrth Europe. As the author writes: "while we don’t see capacity issues, we are blind on what would happen if another link would be severed, or worse, if many are severed". It could be good news to Mr Musk and the Satellite world to be the B-plan.. but its not one-size-fits-all. The fact of the matter is that network reliability will be more & more at challenges. And have more and more micro-DC's all other the place so we don't rely on an hyperscaler very far located. Micro-DC's with a pool of GPUs plus a local resilient SD-WAN are the future, with smart & proactive networking to anticipate issues. Very informative article here regarding the recent cable cuts in the Baltic Sea. Short summary: Latency a bit up but little to no impact on packet loss so far. (This however might change if there is lots of traffic needed to be transited.)

Irradiance was up to 130% of May averages across Mexico last month, but the hot and dry conditions also led to wildfires. Aerosols from smoke can significantly impact irradiance and solar generation, diffusing and absorbing irradiance in the atmosphere and decreasing clear-sky irradiance in affected areas. Seen below, southerly winds pushed the smoke from these fires over the gulf and across the southern and eastern US. Whilst it might not have been visible from the ground, clearsky irradiance in parts of Florida saw an over 10% drop in clear-sky irradiance during the peak of the wildfire smoke on May 19th. However, this impact was only short term, with clear-sky irradiance levels returning to normal as the smoke passed through. Short period aerosol, dust, and smoke events like this might not have long term effect on irradiance but these can disrupt asset operations and your projections resulting in lower than expected power output. Ensure that your PV modelling is accounting for variable aerosols. #solar #renewableenergy #energytransition

A Wave Of Innovation Capturing Energy From Currents. Minesto's Dragon, a 28 ton "subsea kite," that flies underwater in figure-eights generating 1.2 MW of power for the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic. Tidal stream turbines like this use the reliability of the tides and on-shore battery storage as a 24/7/365 renewable energy option. Placed in arrays Minesto's 'Dragons' could generate 40% of the island's base load power. Other players in this new approach include Nova Innovation Orbital Marine Power Ltd. N.B. Operating beneath the waves these systems could also help fight Nimby (Not In My Back Yard)-ism that can block renewable energy project. It could also be a boon for remore island communities looking to go green.
