Over the past few months, we've seen crisis communications related matters at Ivy League Universities (Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Duke University, The University of Texas at Austin) professional sports (Major League Baseball (MLB) Kansas City Chiefs), restaurant franchises (The Wendy's Company), food brands, government agencies, elected officials, fortune 500 companies, etc. While each of the scenarios/issues are different, the one constant that remains the same is the public’s perception of the issue and their sentiment around the entities/individual’s response to the matter. Both the 24-hour news cycle and social media engagement make the response time (it's gotta be quick) and having the right tone/messaging is crucial. This is another remind for all comms/pr pros that the threat of potential crisis is ongoing and can occur at virtually anytime. There's a lot of use cases out there for those who have handled crisis appropriately vs. those who have not. Having your company or client invest in crisis comms preparedness is vital in today's environment. Not being prepared can have lasting and severe consequences for virtually any brand or individual. Customers, the public at large and employees are all watching how a company responds and their standards are incredibly high. Does your client and/or company invest adequately in crisis training and are they truly ready for a crisis issue? What brands and/or individuals have handled a crisis well? P.S. I watched P Diddy's "apology" after a horrific video surfaced where he committed domestic violence and he completely missed the mark. This is a case study on someone whose not handling a crisis well... https://lnkd.in/gn-Q5ebW #crisiscommunications #pr #marketing #B2C #B2B #publicperception #socialmedia #leadership #internalcommuncations

The best way to deal with a crisis is to have a communication plan in place before a crisis hits. In a recent PowerSpeaking Live! I talked with Staci Slaughter, who managed communications for the San Francisco Giants and Curtis Kellogg, a strategic communications professional with vast experience within the military, about being proactive in crisis communications. They stressed the importance of these three actions: 🔹 Developing a comprehensive framework in advance that identifies, for different scenarios, the audiences, messages, vehicles for communicating, the organization’s spokesperson, and internal and external stakeholders. 🔹 Practicing the scenarios and action plan to identify any gaps, challenges, or unanticipated communication needs. 🔹 Including in your plan not just industry-specific scenarios, but also, workplace scenarios like cyberattacks. Any thoughts or insights to share? #crisiscommunication #leadershipcommunication #communicationplan
