Whatever you know about Trauma Informed Design principles, I assure you, if you've been in the design community the last 10 years, chance are you've experienced some level of it. From CV19, Layoffs, RIF, RTO, the systematic removal of all DEI and ESG programs as well as removing support for LGBTQ community, hiring and recruitment practices, GenAI, Inflation, gaslighting employees, etc. Lots of things that just seem very inhumane. These actions just feel antagonistic to many of us. Workplaces responded to org-level trauma with a set of go-to tactics meant to keep the organization moving forward and afloat while navigating organizational entropy, employee trauma and hardship. These initiatives, frequently celebrated by organization leaders as support for employees, were just as harmful as the problems they were meant to address. They prioritized efficiency and productivity over the care of individuals. Machine and factory manufacturing cadences are all the rage. they are also anti-human. These efforts and management frameworks exacerbate the traumatizing dynamics within organizations, contributing to a collective of emotional disharmony and stress that compounds exponentially without a legitimate plan for relief in sight. Here are some great Trauma-informed Design Resources on a website for learning about trauma, trauma-informed care, and digital design.
Thomas W. Maybe I missed it in your handbook , but there is also a growing number of people having neurodivergent + physical disabilities that will need extra assistance and products designed specifically for them, especially with a new generation grows older… one which is more digitally native.
There are so many fantastic resources on that site, and I've used many of them. Thanks for sharing. I also was just part of a project writing a book on trauma-informed design that comes out on the 1st. I'm always happy to connect with others who want to talk about TID. https://www.designedwithcare.org/
Trauma-awareness, and trauma-informed practices need to become standardized across all work. Trauma is far more prevalent than most people imagine--if you think you design for an audience that is trauma-free, think again. Trauma is almost universal, just like disability. Chances are high both will impact everyone, at some point in life.
Thanks for posting this and sharing those resources, Thomas. Having an understanding of trauma-informed design, a very good therapist and strong community has been my saving grace. The TID Discussion Group that collated these resources also meets every month and is a global, multi-disciplinary group of folks (designers, researchers, social workers, etc.) We bring in speakers (some are authors of the resources you shared), or have informal discussions, and rotate the format every other month. If anyone is interested in joining, send me a DM and I can send you the form to request to join the Google Group.
🙏🏻 Thank you for this post Thomas W. It is both beyond thoughtful and timely and I very much appreciate your voice and guidance in the industry and Marjorie O.'s focus in similar terrain for improved and more humane business practices Its about time we all at least attempt to take care of each other and ourselves in a work world that is mostly focused on The Almighty Efficiency of Factory Workstyle Production that feels like a set of Surrealist jokes in The Information Age, in our Modernday Knowledge Work endeavors that require far more than cost trimming to best serve business objectives and the needs of actual customers, people, and humanity. Thank you for your post 🙏🏻
Remember kids, we organise and run organisations like machines (minus the health and safety) via slides and meetings 🙈🧙 Execs and boards have bonuses to get. - industrial psychology is too old school. We're cool "talent" and "belonging" #PR BS to game #ESG and gaslight #employees What would a psychologist know? We forecast and declare increasing profit.
Fascinating. And exactly the concept I’ve been looking for to describe the situation and mental state of the users I’ve been tasked with helping. Compassionate care, delivered digitally.
This is so deep, I wonder how anyone ever got to this level of analysis...
