Last week I joined the third workshop organized by the Cybersecurity & Data Protection Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, where we discussed the challenges associated to AI. Here are my key takeaways from the discussion: 💡 At its early stages: Most companies are still exploring how to leverage this technology in their context, but often lack clear objectives and strong use cases. Start small, test and adapt. ♠️ A high-stakes game: While AI can offer huge opportunities, it also introduces significant new cyber risks to the business. We must help business leaders understand and manage the specific risks across data, software, and processes. 🤝 Collaboration is key: The introduction of secure, compliant, and effective AI solutions require close and transparent collaboration between all relevant departments. Make sure to involve stakeholders as early as possible in the process. I'm thrilled to announce that IBM inaugurated its new IBM Cyber Academy in Rome last week, a center dedicated to providing consulting services to public and private organizations in Italy. The IBM Cyber Academy offers customized training programs to help Italian companies address the urgent need to increase their digital culture, focusing on cyber resilience, AI, and quantum safe. The structure aims to help managers, experts, and leaders navigate the challenges of the current digital and interconnected economy, with a particular focus on system and process security. According to the IBM “2023 Cost of a Data Breach report”, the average cost of a data breach in Italy last year was 3.55 million euros, up from 3.03 million euros in 2021. The average time to identify and contain a data breach is 235 days. However, organizations that have adopted AI and automation in security have seen significantly shorter breach lifecycles (112 days on average) and lower costs (1.56 million euros less on average) compared to those that have not. Investing in cybersecurity education and awareness is a strategic choice for the future, both in terms of building high-level skills and creating new professional opportunities.
