🏭 The techno-industrial revolution 🏭 🗞️ Great paper from NotBoring and Packy McCormick deep diving into the shift from atoms to bits, and now to a combination of both! 🧐 There are numerous challenges for #hardware companies: - Manufacturing is difficult with frictions all along the road of scaling production capacities ; - Incumbents already have scale and distribution ; - Risks are everywhere: IP, regulation, timing, capital. 🗝️ The ways to overcome these challenges exist, for instance: - Start at the high-end of the market, where margins are higher and competition is less cutthroat ; - Position yourself in order to get customer buy-in and government subsidies before translating that into higher margins ; - Use technology and software to be more competitive. 🤑 The main thing to remember is that the defining characteristic of potential successful techno-industrial #startups is structural cost advantage (giving more and better for less). https://lnkd.in/ghiEfxYi

It's best to understand the tech landscape rather than just follow trends. One expert emphasises the need for liquidity and quick exits in volatile markets, while another stresses addressing local challenges instead of chasing global giants. The fusion of AI and deep tech is seen as the next major wave. For aspiring investors, the advice is clear: focus on stable investments, diversify and thoroughly research the teams behind emerging technologies. #investortrends #techtrends #techinvesting

‼️JUST IN ‼️ 🗣️ Venture Bytes #106 Check out the latest edition of Venture Bytes, a monthly insight report from Manhattan Venture Research. As with all our Venture Bytes, this edition has two lead articles in addition to our takes on topical news items, selected funding rounds, and exits. The report rounds out with selected private and public valuations, and a Liquidity Watchlist, which is a proprietary list of top 25 promising private companies in the TMT space that are candidates for a liquidity event – either an IPO or a merger - within the next 12 to 18 months. The two lead articles in this edition are on photonic chips and thermal batteries, respectively. Both areas have promising startups that are driving noteworthy developments. The article on photonic chips talks about a new paradigm in chip architecture and the next transition for large-scale computing by using light to transfer data. Photonic chips reduce heat generation, enable faster data transmission, and increase resilience to environmental factors. Start-ups like Celestial AI, Lightmatter, Ayar Labs, and Salience Labs are at the forefront of this revolution. The second lead article highlights the emergence of thermal batteries. Thermal batteries function by converting electricity into heat, storing it for extended periods, and releasing it when needed. The shifting economics of clean energy, coupled with a favorable regulatory push, have propelled thermal battery technology into the spotlight. Notable startups in this space include Antora Energy, Rondo Energy, Fourth Power Energy, and Malta. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eRzBtyBF

Really enjoyed my AI Revolution conversation with Quora and Poe founder Adam D'Angelo. We discuss a multi-model and multimodal future, how he plans on bringing AI to the masses, and the opportunity for startups to break through in AI. Check it out 👇 https://lnkd.in/gsPC-KGM Andreessen Horowitz
Incumbents have historically accrued the most value from new technologies, but with AI that’s changing. CEO of Quora Adam D'Angelo argues that these incumbents can't afford the same level of fault tolerance as startups, which is highly advantageous to new players in the space. See Adam in conversation with Growth general partner David George on how he's building infrastructure for the masses and where he sees the future of the technology. Last Thursday, we announced our #SeriesA investment round of $16.5 million, led by Index Ventures with participation from General Catalyst, Earlybird Venture Capital, and Founderful. I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the past two years. The manufacturing industry faces a significant problem, with one in every five dollars going to waste. Despite collecting terabytes of data, producers struggle to leverage big data for process improvements. Many enterprises are "data rich, but information poor." To address this, we have invested early in the development of causal AI tools. Amidst the buzz around generative AI, at EthonAI, we have recognized the significant impact of causal AI. We see causal AI as a major driver of both top-line and bottom-line performance. By uncovering the underlying cause-and-effect relationships within complex manufacturing processes, causal AI helps increase output and reduce costs and waste. This financing round positions us at the forefront of manufacturing analytics. The funds will enable us to advance our foundational work on AI models that target the industry's most challenging problems. I would like to express my gratitude to our amazing team and our loyal customers who have believed in us from the very beginning. Your support has been essential to our progress. I am looking forward to working with Katharina Wilhelm and Carlos Gonzalez-Cadenas from Index Ventures to accelerate our growth and continue innovating in the manufacturing sector. Thank you also to Leif Danielsen and Acequia Capital and to everyone involved in this journey. We are excited about the future and the opportunities ahead.
