ThinkAg Harvesting Tomorrow Summit 2024 Recap: The second panel on deploying data for disruption track was on Remote Sensing: Leveraging applications of earth observation data in agriculture. There is a huge base of data that is available from remote sensing. However, this data is not being collected based on the needs of the end users and their respective data requirements. The panelists highlighted how important it is to understand where the data user stands today in terms of their current access to data, what additional data would be useful for improved decision making. They also discussed that dialogue needs to happen between the technology and end user companies to understand what is technically possible to be collected, what is the accuracy of this data, is that accuracy sufficient to make interpretations and decisions. The speakers stressed that to improve the acceptance of remote sensing, there must be clear, honest communication about its capabilities and limitations. Researchers and technology providers need to focus on addressing key variables like crop type, crop area, and the sowing window, while acknowledging that more complicated factors like yield estimation may require complementary field data. So, what’s the future? It’s in the power of computation and connectivity—at the farm level. Look around: the companies creating the most value aren’t factories—they’re distributed networks of connected nodes, each contributing niche value to the whole. And that transformation is coming to agriculture. Agtech isn’t just another tool in a farmer’s toolbelt or a digital upgrade for incumbents—it’s a total reshaping of the agricultural economy. By reducing input costs, we make sustainable practices more accessible to farmers, while better yields ensure food security and profitability. Proximity to consumers fosters direct relationships, enabling faster delivery and fresher produce. Additionally, our commitment to data collection allows for continuous improvement, ensuring that we can adapt to changing conditions and consumer needs, ultimately leading to a more efficient and responsive supply chain. 🚚 It was an incredible experience to work with such a passionate and dedicated team.
