It's Monday morning! (At time of writing). So let's play a game. It's called Early Startup Marketing + Growth Bingo. Alright let's pick the most important one from this list: - Webinars - Google ads - Social posts - Landing pages - Direct outreach - Paid Facebook ads - Hubspot automation Here's the rub. You can pick any of these. Any one of these could be the most important thing for your startup. But if you're pre-seed/seed-stage - there's a very good chance you're over-focusing on something on/off the list that's not direct outreach. Business development and the grind of working referrals, partnerships, and reaching out is SO important at the start. Other things can amplify and add scale and make life easier but at the start it's not meant to be easy. I understand the appeal of the other things - I'm guilty of doing this in my own business too - but trust me on this! -- I'm Marshy and coach early-stage founders through growth. I've found doing things in the right sequence helps you scale out your GTM later.

ABM often gets a bad rap, especially with early stage startups... People think ABM means you’re just running ads to a list of people, or that you need really expensive tech. Here are some of the stages that companies go thru when they're considering ABM as part of their GTM strategy: Stage 1. "ABM? Isn't that like sending ads to a list? Oh, that must be expensive." Companies at this stage either opt out or go buy an ABM platform for $100k. Stage 2. "Oh wait, it’s more than just ads to a list. It’s this comprehensive sales + marketing strategy. A growth strategy that's designed to engage and close specific accounts. Ok, cool cool cool." Stage 3. "Well now I need an intent provider + a data enrichment provider. Maybe a direct mail provider so I can do scalable direct mail sends. How in the world did I end up with a tech stack that's $250k to build out a “true” ABM program?" And that $ amount doesn't even include content or ad spend. Just the tech. Thing is, ABM has little to do with tech and everything to do with strategy. What's cool is, that ABM program might actually look like Demand Gen as Mason shares in this quick video clip. And you don't need $250k or $100k or even $10k (maybe $10k?) to run scrappy ABM. I worked for a startup that shut down. Does that make me a bad marketer? I like to think otherwise. Startups are built to fail. They're built to fail fast and teach us some things in the process. Our journey was tumultuous. But it taught me everything I know of B2B SaaS marketing. 🍀 Writing landing pages that convert 🍀 Writing blog posts that earn featured snippets 🍀 Creating helpful thought leadership content to build in public 🍀 Optimizing content for organic reach 🍀 Building a brand on social 🍀 Crafting email sequences and subject lines 🍀 Analyzing website data 🍀 Building a content marketing strategy 🍀 Weaving narratives into marketing campaigns 🍀 Pivoting product ideas and having a new landing page ready each week 🍀 Conducting customer research And, most importantly, bouncing back from setbacks, deciphering failures, and moving forward with a growth mindset. ✅ LinkedIn is a terrific tool for businesses. 🪙 What's really great is how much value can be derived at no cost. 🔧 Of course it is an amazing tool to use for paid advertising/promotion, but we love how friendly it is to founders who are operating on limited budgets. 😉 Speaking of promotion, although there are pages with far more followers than us, we must be doing something right based on our LinkedIn metrics - see screenshots below. 🦚 In all seriousness, we are proud at how well we know the tool.
