There’s a B2B firm on the fence between hiring an agency or an in-house marketer. They’re an established, sales-driven business. But marketing has historically struggled to make an impact on BizDev. Currently, they don’t have a marketing team. They can either hire a FTE marketer OR work with an agency. My view: If you can find a marketer who… 1. Comes from a similar-sized service firm (not SaaS) 2. Has a strategic mindset (understand business) 3. Can create good content Hire them. Train them. Empower them to create content for your firm. It'll take 6 - 9 months for them to get up to speed. They'll naturally identify weak points in your org. Then, they'll hire vendors to fill those gaps. The alternative: work with an agency or consultant with experience in B2B services who will build a model for what “Good” looks like. Ideally, this firm will help you: 1. Improve your positioning. 2. Create a strategy for BizDev 3. Update your website. 4. Create effective sales enablement. 5. Create expert insights. After they set this up, you can hire an in-house marketer to take over. Ultimately, you want to run this internally. What you can’t do: Hire a marketer, throw them in the deep end, and expect them to succeed when they do not have the experience, data points, guardrails, or framework for what good looks like. And this happens ALL THE TIME. They will NOT succeed.
