As schools prepare for a new academic journey, the initial weeks are crucial for setting a positive tone in the classroom. Here’s why introducing a class contract can make a difference: Advantages of Signing a Class Contract: 1. Building Community: Establishes a sense of belonging and mutual respect among students and teachers right from the start. 2. Clarity in Expectations: Collaboratively outlines classroom rules and consequences, fostering a supportive learning environment. 3. Visual Reminder: Displays the contract prominently as a visual cue of shared commitments and behavioral expectations. 4. Student Engagement: Activities like autobiographical poems and questionnaires help educators understand students' interests and strengths early on. 5. Parent Involvement: Initiates early communication with parents, ensuring a partnership for student success. These practices lay a strong foundation for the academic year, promoting a positive classroom culture and enhancing student-teacher relationships. 📚💬 #BackToSchool

One simple question. That is it. The potential impact? Trust, transparency, vulnerability, connection, and gratitude…just to name a few. For learners of all ages, having a positive student-teacher relationship is critical for their success, both academically and beyond their school walls. In fact, the American Psychological Association affirms that educators who intentionally foster such relationships “create classroom environments more conducive to learning and meet students’ developmental, emotional, and academic needs,” (2024, Rimm-Kaufman & Simmons). 🍁 Could some refuse to take this exercise seriously and record senseless answers? Absolutely. 🍁 Might some responses be absolutely heart-breaking and leave you feeling helpless? It’s likely. 🍁 Yet, consider what this one act could mean to a single student who is struggling in silence. Pose it during your Morning Meeting, allow it to be an Exit Ticket at the end of the week, or infuse it into your SEL curriculum. Whatever you decide, just ask the darn question; then, consider making it a common practice in your classroom. Pro Tip for #edleaders: Model this during your next faculty meeting. It applies to adult learners, as well! I guarantee that you will learn something new about your staff, allowing you to respond in an empathetic, more human-centered way. #edchat #SEL #connection #teaching #students #Thursdaythoughts
