Clarity of language comes up time and again for good reason with design systems, for valid reasons One that I think I’ve seen less discussed is what we mean by a theme. I’d often say that in demos, dark mode is a poor example of a theme. Not because it isn’t one, just that its scope tends to just be a palette change For me, a description that works is that a theme is a collection of design decisions based upon a specific implementation of brand…BUT that can be contextual In reality, the concept of a theme is very flexible. It might be per product, sub-brand…for platforms. What we mean by a theme is then a term we need to be clear about when it comes to our own design systems. What is a theme _to us_ in _our system_? What are you using them to describe? Do you actually need types of themes to express your design landscape? This definition can then inform implementation, whether that’s through design tokens or otherwise Words and the properties we give them matters

2004 - The more you (can) #design, the more possibilities you get. 2024 - The more you yap about design, the more 'valuable' you seem to be. Try using different content frameworks from others. It's boring at this point. That's the least you can do as a designer since designing itself seems not that important or even relevant anymore.

What is designing? 🎨 ⚪ Talking about design ideas isn't designing. ⚪ Setting design goals isn't designing. ⚪ Planning design projects isn't designing. ⚪ Collecting design tools isn't designing. ⚪ Looking at design inspirations isn't designing. ⚪ Pinning design trends isn't designing. ⚪ Watching design tutorials isn't designing. ⚪ Tweeting about design work isn't designing. Only designing is designing. #design #designing #HandsOnDesign #ActualDesigning

Negative space🚫⬜ is not just empty space—it’s a key design tool that can make your work more impactful and clear.👇 🔸The problem: Many designs become overcrowded, making them feel cluttered and hard to understand. This often leads to a weaker message and less impact. 🔸The solution: By strategically using negative space, you can create balance, improve focus, and guide the viewer's attention to what matters most. It helps your designs feel clean, organized, and more effective. 🔸Tips for using negative space: ↳Use space to highlight key elements ↳Avoid overcrowding, and let designs breathe ↳Make sure what’s left out is as important as what’s included 🧠Remember, sometimes less really is more. Embrace the power of negative space and let your designs speak clearly. Are you in the trap? Don't fall into this trap of just regularly designing without updating your portfolio as regularly as you design. I'm currently in it though. I'm thinking of creating a personal rule for myself to update my portfolio at most within 2 weeks after I'm done with any product's design. What do you think? #design #dailydesigndose #portfolio
