🎭 Notting Hill Carnival: Safety in Focus 🎭 The safety of major events is always a topic of significant interest to crowd professionals and recent discussions about Notting Hill Carnival highlight the complexity of delivering Europe's biggest street party. Thank you to Working With Crowds for bringing this important story to the forefront. A Police Federation report described the event as a ‘war zone,’ sparking debate over how best to manage its unique risks. With hundreds of thousands of attendees, Carnival brings together vibrant culture, music, and community—but also high risks, including large crowds, alcohol, drugs, and gang activity. Eric Stuart QPM, former UKCMA Chair, shared his perspective: “This event is high risk… it needs very careful planning and detailed delivery. This only happens when partners can trust each other and work closely together.” Eric also expressed confidence in the Metropolitan Police Service’s MO6 team, who work directly with Carnival organisers and local authorities to plan the event. As professionals in crowd management, these conversations remind us of the critical importance of partnership, planning, and trust in delivering safe, inclusive events. Let’s keep the dialogue going. Sadiq Khan faces questions over globe-trotting London 'night tsar' #SadiqKhan faces fresh questions over public spending after he sends £117k 'night tsar' despite London's declining party scene as 1,165 venues shut in three years Mike Kill of NTIA said: 'There is a big difference between signposting and virtue signalling and driving tangible change. We see a lot of announcements but not so many results.' Mike is absolutely right, there is no point having all these schemes, woke or not, if the very places they are designed for have all closed down. Let me tell you, from someone who has been in this business since the 70s, Nightlife has never been safer, the legislation, the laws & regulations, CCTV, licenced and trained security, WE ARE ACCOUNTABLE, and we want to be accountable to our customers, we want you to not only be safe, but feel safe. TELL THAT MESSAGE, not some story about how you represented and helped some new collective group, wonderful, everybody is welcome, but ONLY IF there is somewhere to go. So to all Nighttime Economy Advisors in the UK and around the world, you MUST start telling the most important people what we do, you MUST tell the ONLY people that matter, that's The Customer. Let them know Where we are, Let them know WE ARE OPEN, Let them know What we do That's how we #SaveNightlife, not by doing multi-training programs behind closed doors for only a select group. https://lnkd.in/eUfZsA-W

Ask for Angela I agree with the message, that venues should actively promote the safety of their guests and have measures/schemes in place to promote safety in the night time economy. I agree with my colleague Luke Elford's comments that "Ask for Angela" isn't the only measure that can be used to promote safety in our night-time venues. However, I would advocate this scheme as a useful tool to be implemented by venues. The data from this exercise is important, to the name and shame premises is an irresponsible and unhelpful use of the captured information. A more productive use, would be to notify the venues directly so they can identify their pain points to address those areas (i.e. with further training). If a venue does identify any weak points, we would encourage them to seek assistance from licensing experts or local authorities. https://lnkd.in/e3fA5g2q

Milton wreaked havoc in its pathway through Florida, and some are saying that Miami Carnival should be cancelled as a result. While it may seem like a respectful thing to sacrifice enjoyment while others are experiencing sorrow, we urge you to reconsider the assumption. • Let’s start with the recognition that Miami did not experience the havoc. To us in the Caribbean, it may seem that Tampa, Orlando, Sarasota and other cities that were hard hit are very closeby, and there will be scenes of costumed revellers passing boarded up homes and destruction but… no. In fact, Miami is as far away from major damage as many of our islands are from each other. • Now think about the thousands of people who are the patrons of Miami Carnival. Thousands who have put time, money, effort, travel bookings and more in place. These people should not be easily dismissed as if they are meaningless. • Let’s also consider that the practitioners, event promoters, designers, DJs (the list goes on and on), etc. are not able to absorb their costs entirely and give up all the revenue. This is entirely unrealistic. Please do not look at organisers as soulless profiteers, they produce a product tied to a 3-day festival and deserve compensation for their talent and work. • Finally, never ever EVER think that Caribbean culture is not valuable. Disneyworld and Universal Studios have announced that they are opening their doors tomorrow morning. You cannot say that our Steelpan, J’ouvert, Parade, Concerts and Parties are offensive when the behemoths of mainstream entertainment are running business as usual. So Make a Mas’ in Miami! Spread the Culture! Spread some Joy! It’s needed. #C15Studios #CaribbeanFinance #CaribbeanCreatives #CaribbeanConnections

Have you read this month’s Land & Business magazine from The CLA? 📰 Englefield House and the wider Estate is featured as a case study about diversification for rural businesses, highlighting the Heritage Live Festivals summer concerts as an example of a unique social experience and commercial opportunity for Estates. Our Estates Director, Edward Crookes and Events Manager, Peter Carson, spoke with Jasmin McDermott at The CLA about the intricacies of planning these large events, the importance of working with an organiser who is aligned with the Estate’s values, as well as the benefits these types of events have for those who live locally and work at Englefield. Edward said: “The filming and events operation forms an important part of the estate’s enterprises in diversifying our sources of income; they make a vital contribution to the costs of maintaining the historic fabric of Englefield House, the park and gardens. “They are hard work for the team, but also great fun and a busy events calendar enriches estate life for those who live and work here.” To read more about this year’s summer concerts, click here: https://lnkd.in/dcKzZYWU The full CLA article can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/eW4rFdbP #EnglefieldEstate #EnglefieldHouse #RuralBusiness #LandedEstate #Diversification #EventsVenue

Mikko Ketovuori is the author of Socionomics: How Social Mood Shapes Society. I had the opportunity to read the original Finnish Language version and the recently published English copy is updated to current events and just as thought provoking. https://lnkd.in/gx7eq9hG I, like many others, saw the drivers of our happiness or dissatisfaction as being events that corralled social mood. Socionomics disagrees and sees that it is social mood that creates the events. These are often multi-year cycles. My own interpretation is that just as societies look to break away from the past, the past, harking back to traditional ‘values’, grabs our attention; we long for things that were core to the lives of our parents and grandparents. One example of this is the 2012 London Olympics. A time of welcome, of reaching out. Four years later the UK voted to leave the EU, the fear of the ‘other’ overwhelming our openness. Why does Russia repeat, again and again, border expansion? Fear of the other along with a whimsical belief that the world should bow to its power. Markets do the same. House prices, share prices, commodities. Part of Mikko’s thesis dovetails with the works of Robert Prechter and his firm, Elliott Wave International - Global Market Analysts will be joining Mikko in London on April 24th. If you’re interested in joining us please do come back to me.

1wThe organisers of Carnival need to ask themselves if the murder of innocent people, along with hundreds of other crimes is acceptable collateral damage? I would ask all the professional people on this forum to tell me what would happen if such murder, rape, drugs, etc happened at other festival or event? The true tradegy of Carnival is it is trapped in the past. It hasn't moved with the times and as such all their brilliant work and effort to promote commumity relations and social cohesion is at risk of being undone Despite being a slightly right of centre grumpy old gammon - I and I suspect millions like me - respect and value what Carnival delivers, not just to the area, but to the UK as a whole Therefore I hope the organisers get their heads out of their backsides and lift this event to the next level. Something which isn't going to happen if they continue down this path Right now Carnival enjoys the huge priviledge of having its security paid for by the police and the by default the taxpayer Pride has to pay for predominantly private security, As do Festivals and Football So rather than criticise this report and see it for what it is - a wake up call An opportunity to achieve even more good in the future Just a thought
