This was a summer job. Never planned on living on the east coast-certainly not Boston. Definitely never planned on working in a car dealership. The plan was to stash some cash for the upcoming year, finish undergrad and head back home to the bay area. ⏩ 15 years. Incredible wife. The best partner anyone could dream of. We’ve two beautiful children that are each other’s best friend (for now). We live in a home I’m proud to call ours that is filled with smiles and love. It is not lost on me; I would have none of this if I had stuck to my plans. And it all started with an interview for a summer job. Sometimes the best plans are meant to fail. Sometimes companies do an incredible job onboarding. I’m eternally grateful for both. I am deeply honored to be recognized as part of Automotive News’ 40 under 40 class of 2024. This achievement is a testament not only to my efforts, but to the support and dedication of everyone I have had the privilege to work with throughout my career. Thank you for being part of my journey. Your guidance, support, collaboration, effort, and execution are the reason I’m writing this now. Not a fan of unsolicited advice, but if I had any to offer- it would be this: 1. Interview everyone. People aren't their resume or CV. I can say with confidence that some of our best team members had the worst resumes. Careers in retail automotive often begin as part of a personal path to redemption- don't limit future success stories. 2. Take responsibility for your culture and environment. Make it one that people want to join and grow in. 3. Never underestimate your personal impact. The numbers may be what get you there, but they won't keep you there. It’s you. How I landed my first job with Masterlift Ireland at 16 with ZERO experience I applied for a summer job at Masterlift back then. Got called for an interview in October (…after summer had ended). During the interview, I remember Dermot Carroll asking me: "Why should I give you the job? You've no experience." My response? "It's the likes of you that won't give the likes of me a chance. I have no experience, but you're looking for experience. Who's going to give me a chance?" I’ll never forget the look he gave me. But he hired me on the spot. I started that day. Worked the full week. On Friday, my mam asked what I thought. I said: "I like it, I think I'll stay." And that's exactly what happened. I never went back to school (except to sit my leaving cert). So, don’t let lack of experience stop you. Be bold. Ask for a chance. Many managers respect that initiative. 32 years later, I still use this approach when facing new challenges. And it STILL works. Remember: Everyone starts somewhere. Your attitude matters more than your experience.

For me as a long-distance diesel driver, this question came at just the right time: Andreas, would you like to drive from Munich to Dresden in a VW IDbuzz? A good opportunity to gain an opinion on Volkswagen's electric portfolio - so far I've only had experience with the VW ID3 and BMW i3 from the early days of driving - and also to get an idea of the infotainment evolutions. No sooner said than done - I set off punctually at Saturday 5 pm and 510 kilometers lay ahead of me in rainy weather. In the end, it took me 7 hours because charging errors cost me some time. What do I like? Definitely the seating position, the silence, the improved infotainment, the sporty chassis and the many electronic safety assistants. It's a lot of fun to drive the car in the city - but that's also where the big weakness lies: the motorway is absolutely not what it likes - 24 kw/100km at a speed of approx. 110km/h results in a range of less than 300km (with corresponding costs of up to €40) and then you're already out of the optimum charging curve between 10% and 80%. Would I do such a transfer again? A resounding yes - it's nice for the average consumer to see what's possible in everyday motoring and where improvements are still needed. Anyone who knows me can confirm that I'm a petrol head and have driven and transferred quite a few diesel and gasoline models. Finally, I wish my HR colleagues at Infineon Dresden every success at job fairs - the car is sure to be a magnet of attraction! Most people start the year saying things like 🤔 I’ll give this role one last chance 🤔 I’ll give my company one last chance not to dangle the carrot and give me the promotion I was promised. 🤔 I’m out of here and will find a new job And the reason I’m asking this now is because my busiest time of year as a career coach is the 2nd half of the year And that’s because most people are saying ‘oh shit!’ we’re half way through the year and the company still hasn’t done what it promised Or I still haven’t done what I promised and I don’t want to end another year in the same situation They realise they need a bit of help and accountability so they reach out to me So check back Has the company done what they promised they would? Have you done what you promised yourself you would do? And if not, reach out and let someone like me help you Don’t end another year in the same situation And also don't wait until the end of the year when it all becomes a made rush Give yourself time That’s when you’ll get the best results 🤗 #newcareer #selfdevelopment #newjob

It is hard to believe that a couple of days ago was my 7-year anniversary with Aston Carter/Aerotek. I am grateful for all the friendships that I have created here as well as all of the professional development that I have received. Seeing someone stuck in their career when they have top-notch credentials and a stellar track record is like seeing a Ferrari on a 25-mph road. I don't know how true this story is, but because I like it a lot I refer to it all the time. (Well, they do say you shouldn't let facts get in the way of a great story!) You know the supercar giveaways you see at airports sometimes? Apparently the only thing the founder of the business does nowadays is make the call to winners*. How cool is that!?! Your only job in the world is to call up complete strangers and make their day! What's the equivalent of that in YOUR work?
