Q&A: Moving and Your TRICARE Coverage Source: TRICARE.mil Author: TRICARE Communications FALLS CHURCH, Va. – As summer approaches and permanent change of station (PCS) season kicks into high gear, many military families find themselves preparing to move to a new duty location. Amid all the packing and planning, it’s important to make sure your TRICARE coverage is ready to move with you. “Moving is a TRICARE Qualifying Life Event,” said Shane Pham, an analyst with TRICARE Policy and Programs at the Defense Health Agency. “This means that your family members may be able to enroll in or change their TRICARE plans.” A QLE opens a 90-day period for you and your family to make eligible enrollment changes, as described in the TRICARE Qualifying Life Events Fact Sheet. This means you have 90 days from the date of your move to change your plan. You must change your address in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). This annual period is your chance to make changes to your TRICARE health plan, ensuring you have the right coverage for 2025. Don’t miss your chance to make adjustments! Key Updates: • New regional contracts take effect on Jan. 1, 2025. If you reside in Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, or Wisconsin, you’ll be moving from the East Region to the West Region. • Verify your information in DEERS and ensure payment methods are updated, especially if you pay by credit card or bank transfer. Changes must be completed by Dec. 31, 2024! What beneficiaries need to do: During TRICARE Open Season, beneficiaries have three choices. • Keep their plan. Beneficiaries don’t need to do anything to stay in your current plan. It will continue if they’re still eligible. • Join a plan. If they qualify for TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select but don’t have it yet, they can sign up now. If they aren’t currently enrolled in a TRICARE plan, there are three ways to enroll. • Switch plans. If a beneficiary already has TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select, they can change to a different plan. They can also switch between single and family coverage. This means your TRICARE contractor is changing from Humana Military to TriWest Healthcare Alliance. What steps should you take? - Check your DEERS account to confirm that all your information is up to date. Starting on November 2nd: -Create an account on the TriWest patient portal. -Update your payment information with TriWest. This will help make sure you can make your payments to TriWest ***If you pay by allotment, you don’t need to do this.
