Here are some steps to increase your chances of securing pre-seed investment in your tech(-enabled) business: 1. Refine your pitch: Clearly articulate your product, market, and unique value proposition. 2. Build a prototype: Develop a minimum viable product to demonstrate feasibility. Highly advise you to approach folks like Specno or Skywalk Innovations to help with this stage. 3. Network actively: Attend industry events such as these Startup Club ZA and Innovation City Cape Town, join startup communities, and seek introductions to potential investors. 4. Create a compelling business plan: Highlight your growth strategy, market opportunity, and financial projections. 5. Target angel investors: Seek individuals interested in early-stage ventures who align with your vision. Can’t stress enough how important it is to have these early investors be aligned in both values and vision. A platform like AngelList Raise could help you manage this process. 6. When we started with CapitalT almost 5 years ago we had this strong idea that investing in the best founders would results in a diverse portfolio. These are the founders that have the grit and passion to turn an idea into a successful business and face the challenges that inevitably come your way. These founders come in many shapes and forms and from all different backgrounds. You cannot pattern match them and there is not one stereotype. Since entrepreneurs often solve the problems, they face themselves, investing in diverse founders results in a strong portfolio with diversity in the types of problems that our founders solve.   That is why we are open to cold inbound pitches, and we actively reach out and make sure that we are visible to founders outside of our own networks. This hugely increases the pool of ideas from which we can select the very best founders. We then use a data-driven approach, which minimises our own bias. Not always the most popular thing to say, but it’s really important that we create the right environment for people to get rich ! The startup world needs wealthy people. Because realistically, most solo investors/angel investors/syndicates that I see are wealthy people in their 40’s-60’s+... They have the most disposable income, and they’ve had a long successful career. I know it sounds strange and maybe a little out of the norm, but we need to be creating the next generation of angel investors now who are in their 20’s and 30’s. Because wealthy people, with money they can lose (90% startup failure rate), are the only ones who can really afford to invest in startups. So over the next 10 years, we need to ensure we know where future wealth is coming from and that it is going to be generated. Otherwise, there’s no money left to back future founders. #startupecosystem #startupfunding #investment

I’m giving you an example of a pre-seed startup funding round in figures and as a process (pre-seed: the first funding round). After designing the best possible profile of an investor (be careful here and give it a lot of time) do a short list of at least 100 potential investors matching the selected profile. 1. 80-100 shortlisted potential investors 2. 40-60 1st meetings (50%) 3. 20-40 2nd meetings (50%) 4. 10-15 closed investments (40%) Just an example. If you know the absolutely best investors with the best potential match: then you probably can have just 10+ meetings to close the round. But that is rare especially these times.
