Food tech innovation isn’t just about new features—it’s about creating real, lasting value. Reading Food On Demand and Adam Wahlberg's recent piece on Nabeel Alamgir🦄 highlights just that. Not only is he delivering solutions for restaurant partners but also building a network of “food friends”—the kind of connections that make tech more meaningful and long-term for the industry. Seeing foodtech move toward more thoughtful, collaborative solutions is promising for all of us who care about where the industry’s heading. Here’s to the teams driving innovation with purpose!

This was a must-watch for me. This Week in Startups (my favorite show about tech) hosting Jonathan Neman, co-founder of Sweetgreen (my favorite foodservice brand). Inspiring. Here are a few of my personal highlights: ✅ Learned about a book called “Unreasonable Hospitality” (added to my reading list at the very top) ✅ Sweetgreen is poised to start rolling out automated kitchens — which is crazy (is this the first big brand that managed solve the CAPEX problem with robotics in foodservice?) ✅ It was super sad to hear that Sweetgreen gave in to the aggregators, even though they are so strong in their own digital channels (does this mean we are all doomed in foodservice?) ✅ Loved the idea of “Spotify” for food - such a promising concept, although quite challenging in implementation. All and all, highly recommended! https://lnkd.in/dxv6qsdu

I had a fun conversation with Jose Alonso about Caldo Restaurant Technologies, which is helping operators of all sizes automate their morning prep with its new robotic assistant Ryo. In this episode we talk about the current state of restaurant prep and how Ryo improves COGS and labor efficiency through its precision portioning system that can handle a wide variety of ingredients and cuisine types. Whereas back-of-house automation has been mostly relegated to publicly-traded QSRs, startups like Caldo have the potential to be adopted by any restaurant thanks to its 7 sqft footprint and affordable monthly fee. Startups are being recognized for developing new tech to reduce waste, like turning cooking oil into fuel. Their solutions can help restaurants slash environmental impact. This could help reduce a major source of restaurant waste in an eco-friendly and cost-effective way. I would love to learn more about how operators can implement a system like this in their restaurants. Kudos to these forward-thinking startups for creating solutions that benefit restaurants, the environment, and their bottom line! #zerowaste #Innovation #RestaurantIndustry

Leon Davoyan, one of the visionaries of the restaurant industry and CTO of Dave's Hot Chicken, shared how he’s constantly planning a year ahead with regard to tech stack investment decisions during Milagro’s FSTEC24 Innovation Forum session in September. 😎 Choosing the right restaurant tech is not an ad-hoc process – it’s an ongoing planned exercise of evolving and adapting to innovations. 🏄Subscribe to his idea of the 4 Fs for a straightforward roadmap to making tech stack decisions: 📌 Fit: Make sure the new tech is a good fit for your brand. 📌 Fix: Opt for it only if it fixes or solves something for your business. 📌 Fad: Don’t blindly follow the trend – pick a solution that is for real and not a passing fad. 📌 Financial: Ensure that your new tech drives more ROI and boosts sales. For other key takeaways, watch the full session with Leon, Wade Allen, industry heavyweight and president of Costa Vida Fresh Mexican Grill, and Hamed Mazrouei, founder/CEO of Milagro. https://lnkd.in/g4F-9abB

Love the ideas that Alistair highlights here on the future of restaurant tech. We have always valued connecting with partner systems to try to make it seamless for the restaurants using our systems alongside others. Tech companies who try to wall off and not play nicely with others often end up left out in the end because while in the short terms it seems like protecting your own interest, in the long term its just the opposite of what the customer actually wants...the connected restaurant experience. #RestaurantTech #TechStack
Restaurant tech is in it's early stages. I made the comment to a couple of people this week that we are likely to see some Pets.com/Webvan etc. type failures (akin to the Dot Com bubble). We are still in the very early stages of restaurant technology as a category. There is also likely to be a bunch of consolidation as companies get put together for more resources (better able to deliver products that solve the big problems) and to generate better financial results. The second part of that is that we will see far more stitching together/integrations becoming more robust and more prevalent as the industry matures (this is already starting to happen and will only accelerate over the next couple of years). We are not extremely far off from a world where the data you have is open and accessible and easily able to be pushed from one system to another (this will materially improve operators lives). The industry has to move in this direction and invest in these tools. Finally we will see less feature companies and far more solutions oriented companies (many of which will provide setup and implementation as well as ongoing support for their restaurant client's) that truly save meaningful problems in the space. That service and support drives Return on Time in addition to Return on Investment, by giving operators back more time to focus on other aspects of their business.
