Yesterday, I had the privilege of anchoring a fireside chat at the Edo State Startup Week Conference, one of the largest gatherings of startups in Edo State, running through the rest of the week. My session with JEAN Omefe delved into a crucial topic for early-stage startups: talent retention. We explored founders' unique challenges in retaining talent and the obstacles that talents encounter when working with startups. Several key points surfaced: For Founders: 1. Many startups are focused on building for funding over creating real impact, which can be a deterrent for mission-driven talents. 2. The absence of performance-tracking metrics limits the ability of talent to assess their growth and hone their skills. 3. There's often no clear pathway for continuous learning or development, making it challenging for talent to see long-term potential within startups. For Talent: Talents were advised to outline a clear career path to ensure alignment with a startup’s mission and culture before joining. Additionally, they were reminded that early-stage startups often operate with limited funding, so financial rewards might not be immediate—joining a startup should be driven by passion and growth potential rather than just pay. The session included an open conversation with the audience, adding valuable perspectives. Having been on the talent side of this dynamic until recently, I was able to steer the dialogue towards a balanced view that resonated well with both founders and talents in the room. Conversations like these are vital to strengthening our entrepreneurial ecosystem, and I hope to see more discussions that empower talents and startup founders to thrive together. I look forward to the rest of the week at the Startup Week Edo and the impactful sessions ahead!

Is competition the only game in town for startups? Think again! Collaborative Coopetition is changing the dance in the startup world. This concept combines collaboration and competition, pushing startups to not only compete but also collaborate for faster growth. Here's why startups are choosing coopetition: 1. Innovation on Fast Forward: Collaboration unlocks a wider pool of knowledge and resources, accelerating innovation and development of new solutions. 2.Cost Optimization: Sharing resources and infrastructure cuts expenses and increases efficiency. 3. Market Expansion Power: Partnerships open doors to new customers and markets by leveraging each other's networks. 4. Risk Mitigation: Sharing the load! Collaboration helps startups spread risks and learn from each other's experiences. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Coopetition requires careful navigation: 1. Balancing Act: Striking the right balance between collaboration and healthy competition is crucial. 2. Building Trust: Strong trust and open communication form the foundation for successful coopetition. 3. Clear Agreements: Clear agreements ensure everyone's on the same page and benefits are shared fairly. Want to learn more? Check out my book via the website link

New Workshop: Working with Startups for Corporations. I have had many people asking me for a while to create this workshop, and come deliver this in their organizations. No matter in what industry, whether in the climate space, manufacturing, software and technology or mobility, I am a big believer in the power that startups and corporates could have together, but the reality is that that relationship is complex. Founders are frustrated from a slow, low trust, and cumbersome process and feel exploited, and Corporates are exciting to talk with founders but converting those to actions is lacking. This workshop is built to help corporates understand better founders and their startups, and learn best practices on engaging and partnering with startups. -> Who is this workshop for? 1️⃣ Corporate Executive and Corporate Boards. 2️⃣ CVCs and Corporate Innovation Organizations. 3️⃣ Corporate Innovators. -> What will you experience during this workshop? 1️⃣ The anatomy of a startup. 2️⃣ Overview of today’s ventures market. 3️⃣ Overview of the mechanisms of Corporate Venturing, and the CVC space. 4️⃣ Best practices for engaging and partnering with startups. 5️⃣ Corporate-Startup Simulations and Use cases. 6️⃣ Panel discussions.
