I know that Wall Street loves certainty, and giving investors some runway to get used to the idea of Bob Iger leaving The Walt Disney Company (and demonstrating that the board is taking it all seriously) is a good thing. But for employees at all levels, these staged successions over multiple months (and more than in a year in this case) are almost uniformly terrible. In circumstances like this, most senior leaders start looking over their shoulders, jockeying for position so that they are well placed when the new person comes in - or worse still, start listening to the headhunters when they begin to call. For the rest of the team, there's just mass uncertainty about overall direction and strategy. And for the CEO themselves (even one as forceful as Iger), there's a gradually increasing lame duck status that makes achieving goals more difficult than it already is. Disney is a strong enough company to come through all of this, but don't expect the next twelve months to be easy.
