April is National Volunteer Month, giving you the perfect opportunity to do good in the world whether you have an hour or an afternoon to spend helping others. Here are some fun ways to lend a hand and make an impact on your community: *Park Clean Up - Grab some bags and invite your pals to spend a few hours on trash duty at your favorite green space. *Donate Books - If you have books, magazines or other reading materials collecting dust, put them to good use and donate to a local school or library. *Meals on Wheels - Find a local organization that delivers meals to those in need and see how you can help. Additionally, if you have a friend or neighbor who needs access to food, contact the organization and assist with the paperwork. *Letter Writing – Show members of the military your appreciation with a handwritten letter thanking them for their service and sacrifice. Write a service member you know personally or check out an organization like Operation Gratitude. How to settle in your new rescue dog. We've created an information booklet that outlines everything you need to know on the basics of dog ownership, and you can get hold of it right now. As many of you know, I am an animal lover and passionate advocate for bully breed dogs. This year I am honored to serve on the Board for The Love Pit Rescue, and today I'm asking you to help us save pups, and allow me to DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT because it's the most important day of the year for The Love Pit: North Texas Giving Day! This NTGD, one of TLP's main focuses (and a favorite of mine) is its new iStayHome Program, which helps us keep beloved family members where they belong. Financial hardships and housing issues are plaguing dog owners more than ever in this economy. It’s time for us not to chastise folks who are facing these challenges, but rather to offer them a helping hand that keeps a dog that may end up in the shelter with its family. The iStayHome Program does just that, allowing us to provide grants for medical care, supplies, temporary housing or other needs with one simple goal: keeping dogs OUT of the shelters and in the arms of their families. Dallas shelters continue to face record capacity routinely staying at 150%+. We cannot adopt our way out of this crisis, but we can support strategic initiatives to keep dogs out of the shelter in the first place. The iStayHome program does just that. I can’t think of a better feeling than knowing others get the joy of keeping their families whole this NTGD. After all, a house isn’t a home without a dog.....or 4 :) ).
