This happened yesterday. "Pioneering British newspaperman Sir Harry Evans (1928-2020) was one of the giants of post-war journalism. The award-winning work he spearheaded as editor of The Northern Echo, The Sunday Times, and The Times set the gold standard for courageous investigative journalism. For Sir Harry, trust in journalism was essential and the debasement of fact-based reporting was a serious concern for functioning democracy. To reignite Sir Harry’s values, Truth Tellers champions the work of today’s investigative journalists." The conference, which is all online to view, was a fascinating insight into the work of some eminent broadcast and print professionals, some of whom, risk their lives in war zones. Some of whom, uncover injustices and communicate much deserved truth for victims. The work goes on and this conference shone a light on that. It was a compelling and fascinating watch. All rise the digital influencer - but long live investigative journalism. It's the only way we have to hold companies and individuals to account. The skill of journalists in uncovering truth, like dogs with bones - is something that we should support and champion - but most of all have an awareness of. Support your regional newspapers. It's where all journalists begin their careers and learn their craft. They are the essential channels for truth and accountability and very sadly we are losing these institutions but we must do all we can to protect the profession.

Journalism all over the world is not what it once was. Journalism has become biased, skewed, and overly dependent on sponsors. Enter Yellow Page journalism, and Paid journalism. Building Trust in Journalism: Reflections from VVOJ’s Investigative Journalism Conference 2024 Last Friday, the JIM cluster from ERMeCHS had the privilege of hosting a dynamic panel discussion at the VVOJ Investigative Journalism Conference 2024 in Rotterdam. Guided by moderators Mijke Slot and Sergül Nguyen, the conversation centered on a theme crucial to the future of journalism: building trust between journalists and their audiences. JIM members Jacco van Sterkenburg, Delia Dumitrica, and Marc Verboord were joined by Wubby Luyendijk (NRC) and Kasper Goethals (De Standaard). Together, they shared insights on: 💡 Navigating trust in today’s complex media environment. 💡 Practical approaches for investigative journalists to foster trust. 💡 The critical role of diversity and inclusion in newsroom dynamics. SOJC journalism Professor of Practice Damian Radcliffe, in collaboration with the Agora Journalism Center, has released a new report that “aims to contribute to ongoing conversations about how to make journalism more sustainable, inclusive, and valuable.” Read it here: https://lnkd.in/edpqAgNh The report, focused on the idea of community-centered journalism, emphasizes creating news for and with communities instead of simply reporting on them. “Journalism has never stood still, and we hope that Community-Centered Journalism will play a crucial role in its on-going evolution and development,” Professor Radcliffe writes. His report dives into the practical steps necessary to advance the practice of community-centered journalism. The journalism industry is currently navigating significant hurdles, with widespread layoffs and the closure of numerous news outlets. This downturn not only impacts media professionals but also poses a threat to the vitality of local news and the informed society it supports. As highlighted by "The Atlantic", the decline of local journalism leads to diminished governmental accountability and a less engaged public. Paul farhi a journalist for "The Atlantic"wrote "Is American Journalism Headed Toward an ‘Extinction-Level Event". Despite these challenges, journalists remain dedicated to their mission, with many expressing a strong commitment to their work Pew Research Center wrote "Journalists Sense Turmoil in Their Industry Amid Continued Passion for Their Work". However, the rise of misinformation and increasing concerns about press freedoms add complexity to an already tumultuous landscape Pew Research Center, "Journalists Highly Concerned About Misinformation, Future of Press Freedoms". In these times, it is crucial for both media professionals and the public to advocate for and support independent journalism. Upholding the principles of a free press is essential for maintaining an informed and engaged society.
