Following her recent appearance on the BBC, our global co-CEO, Linn Frost was asked by Campaign UK to expand on her thoughts around the dual nature of Social: a powerful tool for inspiration and connection, yet also a source of harm, distortion, and risk. Our key takeaways: 1️⃣ Social media acts as both a reflection and distortion of society, amplifying positive aspects like activism and creativity while exposing darker issues such as trolling, echo chambers, and harmful challenges. 2️⃣ Brands play a critical role in influencing social platforms, setting standards for content, and contributing positively through thoughtful campaigns and partnerships, as demonstrated by Norwich City FC and Virgin Money. 3️⃣ While age restrictions are a step toward safeguarding younger users, their effectiveness is limited due to underage users bypassing these measures, emphasising the need for broader solutions like proactive moderation and education. 4️⃣ An approach involving brands, platforms, governments, and individuals is necessary to ensure a safer and more positive online environment, leveraging influence, education, and regulation. Look at us, we are the media now. This election proved one thing: old-school celebrities have lost their clout. Nobody listens to them anymore—their influence is nothing but smoke and mirrors. The real power players are those who rule the internet. Their endorsements turned the tide, and this gap will only widen in the coming years. We’re witnessing the rise of a new social class: the digital aristocracy. In five years, those who haven’t built their online brand will become a second-class citizen. The rules have changed. Those with influence online will dominate financially, attract the best clients, claim the highest revenue streams, and set the terms. The rest will be left scrambling, grinding harder for less, just to stay afloat. Traditional paths are dead. This is a matter of personal and professional survival. Get in or get left behind. - Atlas @dentesleo

It’s no secret that the media landscape is shrinking. Mainstream media outlets are downsizing, community papers are shutting down, and even the big players are working with skeleton crews. Theodora Jean of Coldwater Communications sums it up perfectly: “There are less people to pitch to, and there are less outlets to pick up stories" – but this scarcity has increased the perceived value of mainstream media for clients. In this changed environment, it’s crucial to adapt strategies, diversify media outreach, and strategically leverage mainstream hits. Must read: "...The problem is that social-media platforms’ business model undermines the social foundation of democratic participation. That is, social-media platforms purposely seek to undo local communities to maximize profits. The reason is that social-media companies profit from our digital relationships, but not from our “physical” relationships, those that take place in parks, coffee shops, book clubs, and the like. As a result, social media platforms see the physical relationships between people as competing with the digital relations they offer." https://lnkd.in/dnkFyM49
