A message for health care CEOs & Executive Directors - Don’t hide behind your Board because you’re hurting your organization & your reputation as a leader.   Over the years, I’ve witnessed many CEOs who have fallen into the trap of not committing or not making a decision when working with other organizations on a larger project.   When asked for their position or endorsement of a specific direction I often heard “I’ll have to check with my Board” or “I’m not sure what my Board thinks” or “I can’t speak for my Board”.   I always found this odd because these folks were supposed to be the leaders of their organizations & would certainly be in a position to understand what their boards supported or didn’t.   They also reported directly to their boards on a regular basis and worked with them to develop strategic plans & goals to guide their organization’s work activities.   These CEOs thought they were being shrewd & playing it safe by avoiding or not providing a timely response.   However, by hiding behind their boards they frustrated their peers & colleagues, delayed implementation of important projects and lost a lot of their integrity & credibility.   CEOs are partners with their boards & they should be clear about the decisions they have been delegated the authority to make.   If you’re a CEO - be a leader, be a collaborator & be decisive.   Make things happen for your organization instead of waiting for your Board’s endorsement to move forward – because that’s what good leaders do!
