Perception really shapes our reality, doesn't it? How we see the world influences how we interact with it, especially in leadership. For instance, if a leader views challenges as threats, their approach might be more defensive or cautious. But, see those same challenges as opportunities, and suddenly there's room for innovation and growth. It’s like looking through different lenses; each lens offers a unique view and response to the same situation. Let’s talk about shifting perceptions, because sometimes the lens we’re using isn’t helping us or our teams. One powerful tool is to actively seek out diverse perspectives. Chatting with someone who views a problem differently from you can offer insights that shift your own perspective. Maybe your colleague sees a delay in a project not as a setback but as a chance to refine the output further. Another tool is reflection. Take a moment to step back from a situation and ask yourself, “Is there another way to view this?” Often, just questioning our automatic interpretations can open up new ways of thinking. Finally, mindfulness can be a game-changer. It helps us become aware of our habitual reactions and the thoughts that fuel them. With mindfulness, you can catch yourself when you're falling into old perceptual habits and choose a fresher, more helpful perspective. Changing how we see things can alter our leadership and create a more positive, effective environment for everyone involved. _________________________________________________________________ The Other Leader is available to support your goals of building a conscious culture of reason and meaning in your organisation. I'm a BIG Sherlock Holmes enthusiast and THIS is my favorite of the words given to him by Sir Arthor Conan Doyle. If yours is, "Elementary, my dear Watson..." then you are dead to me because Holmes NEVER said this! The pipe quote resonates with me because it is a powerful reminder of the necessity of time for deep thinking—a quality that research shows is crucial for complex problem-solving and sound decision-making. Studies indicate that leaders who carve out time for reflection and strategic thinking make better, more sustainable decisions. Research by Kahneman (2011) on “thinking fast and slow” highlights the pitfalls of impulsive decision-making, showing that thoughtful deliberation leads to more nuanced and effective solutions. Additionally, a study by Cross, Rebele, and Grant (2016) emphasizes the value of “mindful space” as a buffer against burnout, allowing leaders to approach challenges with fresh perspective and insight. Do you confirm or deny, Chris Bittinger? Reflection time enables leaders to address issues with both breadth and depth—what Heifetz and Linsky (2002) refer to as “getting on the balcony” to see the bigger picture. In a world where decisions are expected instantly, this kind of strategic distancing is often overlooked, yet it’s essential to solve complex, problems. Whether it’s a ‘three-pipe’ problem or simply a challenge that requires more than a quick fix, let’s make space in our schedules—and in our teams’ schedules—for meaningful thought. Real leadership is as much about taking time to think as it is about taking action. That's it for now. Please excuse me for a minute (or 50) while I go light a pipe (or 3). As leaders, we all face moments of self-doubt and intrusive thoughts. Generally, there are two ways we can respond to these thoughts. And depends on how you CHOOSE to respond to them, the impact it will have on our leadership will be completely different. LEADER A 1️⃣ "What if I make the wrong decision?" 👉 Imagine this thought taking over your mind, making you second-guess every move. This will lead to hesitation and missed opportunities. 2️⃣ "I'm not good enough to lead this team. Someone else could do it better." 👉 Picture yourself feeling inadequate and overwhelmed. This will prevent you from taking bold actions and inspiring your team. 3️⃣ "If this project fails, it will be all my fault. What will everyone think of me?" 👉 Visualize anxiety spiraling out of control, affecting your decision-making. This will create a stressful work environment. LEADER B 1️⃣. "What if I make the wrong decision?" 👉 Recognizing the thought without letting it control you will help you stay grounded and focused. 2️⃣ "This thought does not define my ability to lead. I am more than my doubts." 👉 Reminding yourself of your strengths will build confidence and resilience. 3️⃣ "I acknowledge this thought, but I will not let it control my actions." 👉 Accepting the thought and letting it pass will enable you to lead with clarity and calmness. 🤔 So how does this extend to the workplace setting? In yesterday's post: https://shorturl.at/U5QJI, we explored the foundational step in our pyramidal approach by exploring a Business Leader's core responsibility: "Value Creation". Today, we will build upon that by examining the second step in the pyramid, which focuses on the "Individual", an approach, that helps the leader navigate these waters with an action plan. As a reminder, the central question we are aiming to address through these 3 series posts is: 👉 "How can one maintain emotional composure during challenging discussions with team members?" With that in mind, let's transition to the second pillar: 📚 Step 2 - Supporting Pillar: At the Individual Level, effective engagement demands thoughtful consideration. While it may seem straightforward at first, effective engagement relies heavily on having a structured and clear action plan. The prep is crucial, as it enables the leader to navigate potential landmines effectively. Here are the key practices I follow: ➔ Stay Goal-Focused: Clarify your objectives before the conversation to ensure the dialogue is productive and solution-oriented. ➔ Practice Radical Candor: Communicate with honesty and care, balancing directness with empathy to foster a culture of constructive feedback. ➔ Cultivate Self-Awareness: Recognize your emotions and triggers. Self-awareness helps you manage responses effectively and prevents knee-jerk reactions. ➔ Use Clear Language: Avoid jargon and vague terms. Simplify instructions and concepts, using relatable examples to ensure the message is clear and understood. ➔ Practice Active Listening: Truly listening to what others have to say, asking clarifying questions with practical candour helps in genuinely understanding their perspectives. This approach not only enhances collaboration but also drives effective problem-solving and innovation, ensuring that all team members feel valued and supported in their contributions. ➔ Acknowledge Feelings: Recognize and acknowledge expressed emotions to foster an empathetic dialogue. However, redirect to the facts and primary objective in play. ➔ Maintain Calmness: Stay composed, even in tense moments—practice mindfulness techniques, such as focused deep breathing, or the likes. ➔ Frame Discussions Collaboratively: Use inclusive language to create a shared sense of purpose. ➔ Reflect on Conversations: Reflect on what was said, what went well and what can be improved. ⏳ Stay tuned: Tomorrow we will conclude this series by exploring the third and final step in the pyramid. #Leadership #BusinessLeadership #TeamLeadership #Value

WHICH SHOULD WE TRUST - OUR BODY OR OUR MIND⁉ Leaders are always expected to make effective decisions, manage multiple tasks, and meet complex challenges. One essential skill is often overlooked: the ability to listen—not just to others, but to ourselves. This listening involves paying attention to both our body's signals and our rational mind, creating a harmonious balance between intuition and logic. 🔶As I have written many times, our bodies are constantly receiving and processing information. We might feel a tightness in our chest, something in our stomach, or a sudden sense of calm. These sensations are the body’s way of communicating with us. They are sometimes reminders to stay grounded and remain in a state of peace. Other times, they warn us and perhaps indicate that someone isn’t communicating openly or hiding something from us. 🔶Leaders are accustomed to making decisions based on facts, data, and analysis. This approach is crucial when creating strategies or solving problems. And it often works well. However, there are times when the logic is different than what our body is telling us. 💡So, the question is: Which should we trust—our body or our mind? The answer is not straightforward because it depends on the situation. The key is playing with both elements—testing the results. By observing the results, we start to understand how to integrate these two parts more effectively. Ignoring either the body or the mind can lead to imbalanced decisions. Leaders who dismiss intuition may make choices that, although logically smart, lack deeper values or feelings. On the other hand, those who neglect rationality may make impulsive decisions that aren't grounded in reality. 💡The most effective leaders are those who don’t ignore any part of themselves. They listen deeply—to their bodies, their minds, and to the world around them. 🚩Balance is always the key. Balance2Business #somatic #Leadership #coaching
