This #HydroGeoSphere research highlight showcases the strengths and flexibility of HGS in evaluating water resources in a Colombian watershed. This region, characterized by numerous geologic faults and high rainfall rates, had not been previously studied in detail. The authors approached the modeling sequentially, using the Water Modeling Framework (WMF) to estimate groundwater recharge rates from rainfall observations and two synthetic scenarios based on dry and wet conditions. Valero Energy completed the wreck removal of its jackup Naga 7. The incident occurred due to rapid penetration into the formation in May 2021, when the rig tilted and submerged. Apart from earlier removal of the helideck, the wreck removal commenced in May 2023. Reflection: 1-Pre-Salvage Assessment:Environmental Impact Studies: Identify risks to marine ecosystems and mitigate pollution (e.g., oil spillage, debris) 2-Enhanced survey practices, including real-time monitoring, could have prevented the catastrophic instability. 3-Combine geophysical data to create 3D models of the seabed, highlighting risks like voids, soft layers, or excessive slope gradients.
