dichotomy - /dʌɪˈkɒtəmi,dɪˈkɒtəmi/ - noun A division or contrast between two things that are entirely different. When a client calls asking 'could you mix a community nature trail and garden with a Skatepark?' we get the pencils out to see if the 2 can co-exist. No idea if this will work, but the best projects lay on the other side of the comfort zone. Any biodiversity, landscaping, planting experts out there, give me shout. (20 mins time limit on this sketch...alright it took 25mins)

Dear Colleagues- I'm providing an online workshop on the role of native plants in managed gardens and landscapes (see link below). This workshop currently qualifies for 6 CEU credits for a variety of professionals including architects, landscape architects, and engineers. It has been approved for ISA credit as well. While the focus is nominally on the US Northwest, the science presented is applicable anywhere. Here is the agenda: Native vs. Nonnative Plants: Examining the Science behind the Controversy Challenges for Native Plants in Managed Gardens and Landscapes Climate Change and Native Plants in the Northwest Managing Invasive Plants in the Northwestern US Alternatives to Invasive Plant Species – Native and Introduced Creating a Robust Pollinator Landscape

Real Urban Permaculture Strategy and design Permaculture, and let’s get this right, is a holistic design system that we use to build sustainable human settlements that care for the Earth and for people. “Permaculture principles focus on thoughtful designs for small-scale intensive systems which are labor efficient and which use biological resources instead of fossil fuels. Designs stress ecological connections and closed energy and material loops. The core of permaculture is design and the working relationships and connections between all things." ~ Bill Mollison Urban Permaculture is a strategic approach to urban regeneration that takes into account the impact of urban areas on the biosphere and on the people who live in them. It also considers future trends and their potential needs and consequences. You’re not going to find any info on how to grow food in a city in this article. What I’m writing about is a strategic approach to urban restructuring, it’s based on studies in neuroscience, anthroplogy and tied together with Permaculture design. So where do we start? As usual we analyse, then we design and then we build. So let’s do some analysis: Read the full article (8 minute read) it's free https://lnkd.in/eAMzFsah My articles are free and you can access them all by subscribing to my Substack here https://lnkd.in/ehp33RgD #permaculture #agroforestry #climatechange #climateaction #agroecology

Hello! I've finally finished my new website! It's been an enjoyable experience, and a valuable exercise for myself. I tend to think in pictures and diagrams, so it's been really useful to create a dynamic visual platform which illustrates who I am professionally, and has helped me work out a narrative around what I want to do next. Even if it only gets a few clicks it's been worth it. AI is integrated into IONOS's web platform. I have a lot of photos of my own so I don't need AI pictures, but it was helpful to rephrase some of the text. See if you can work out where it's been used! 😊 (While you're there, IONOS, how do I get my logo to appear instead of AI generated text on my website link below? I've faffed about with the SEO page "Image for social media", but it doesn't seem to work) #newbusiness #urbanforestry #webdesign #trees #arboriculture #sheffieldissuper

#environmentaleducation A most useful and enjoyable read. PLANT-LIFE, a Walk with Nature. ISBN: 9791221009576. Available online from The Great British Book Shop https://lnkd.in/dgZ-uTmW, and the Natural History Book Service https://lnkd.in/d-njdZwn. For more detailed description and promotion see: www.nartura.net BOOK REVIEW “Is there anyone in the world who does not have some kind of interaction with the plant kingdom? Consider the food we eat, the landscapes we enjoy, the flowers we value for their beauty and colour, the habitats we acknowledge that shelter and support the amazing wildlife communities – just some of the ways that we understand and appreciate plants. Less frequently however do we really stop to thoroughly investigate and admire the plant kingdom in all its myriad forms and appreciate all the incredible resources provided and the complexity of the plant world altogether. This book – Plant-Life, a Walk with Nature – sets out to entice and encourage us to be more mindful and questioning about the plant kingdom. The chapters range from identifying and celebrating nature through to holistic considerations of plant-life, evolution and inter-relationships, biodiversity, climate change, conservation and education. It is not a book which can be skipped through lightly but often because in each chapter fascinating questions are posed to make the reader question and think about what he/she might already understand or know. Not only are there many passages and paragraphs which give pause for reflection but the range of links to research, old and new, and the development and direction of new enquiries is incredible. In fact, I would say that the depth and complexity of the book almost mirrors that found in the plant world itself. Even with a number of photographs and diagrams, this book is a dense read and it might have been appropriate to publish the work in two (or more) volumes but I think in this case the author did not want to separate the vital interconnections and holistic view between say, art and science or identification and adaptations found within the plant world. This book would appeal to those with a general love of nature – both as artists and scientists – and for those studying conservation and biodiversity at advanced level. It is also a book that would help readers to begin to understand the complexities of plant growth and adaptations which will be useful when future challenges regarding habitat loss and climate change need to be met”.
