Over the past couple of years, Bali's beaches have faced significant challenges and transformations. Renowned for their pristine beauty and vibrant culture, these beaches have seen fluctuating visitor numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, the restrictions led to a stark decrease in tourism, resulting in cleaner beaches and a temporary respite from overcrowding and pollution. The break allowed local ecosystems to recover, with clearer waters and healthier marine life observed. However, as travel restrictions eased, the return of tourists brought renewed concerns about sustainability. Popular beaches like Kuta, Seminyak, and Nusa Dua experienced a resurgence in visitors, which, while beneficial for the local economy, also posed environmental threats. Increased waste, plastic pollution, and damage to coral reefs became pressing issues once more. Efforts have been made to address these concerns, with local authorities and communities implementing beach clean-ups, stricter waste management policies, and educational campaigns to promote eco-friendly tourism. Despite these efforts, balancing tourism growth with environmental preservation remains a complex challenge. The future of Bali's beaches hinges on continued commitment to sustainable practices to ensure that they remain beautiful and thriving for generations to come.

BIOFIN has supported the Sustainable Tourism Certification Scheme in Sri Lanka since 2018. The certification was previously available only to large hotel operators. In 2023, smaller hotels were also allowed to obtain sustainability certification, adding value to their business and contributing to a greener future. After thorough assessments, one hundred small hotels were certified in December 2023. The certification criteria focus on key sustainability indicators such as using renewable energy and reducing plastic. Companies with harmful waste management practices are disqualified. This initiative has gained the recognition of international travel booking platforms such as Booking.com, which awards certified hotels with two green leaves, increasing their visibility among travelers. International travelers visiting #SriLanka have shown their willingness to pay more for services that adhere to sustainability criteria, highlighting the growing demand for environmentally conscious travel experiences. Certification has not only increased the revenue of certified companies but has also attracted environmentally conscious tourists. To that end, Sucofindo held an audience (Monday, 24th June'24)with the Bali Provincial Government to see how sustainable tourism procsses can be applied across various sectors, including sustainable supply chain schemes through organic farming and green hotels. We understand that with proper implementation and collaboration, environmental awareness will be created to jointly support the development of Bali Net Zero Emission. Hopefully in the long run this Net Zero Emission program can be implemented in other provinces.
