Kneecap, the partly fictionalised film biopic on the rise of the Irish rap group of the same name, has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film. The shortlist of 15 films will become five when the final nominations are announced on January 17th. Kneecap’s song Sick in the Head has also been shortlisted in the Original Song category. A total of 89 songs were eligible in the category and 15 were chosen. The achievement caps a breakout year for the group, who emerged from a DIY traditional music, rave and Irish-speaking scene in west Belfast and have gone on to become central to the Irish-language revival: https://lnkd.in/eZHW7m2A

THE CULTURAL IMPACT OF SYNC The idea of combining licensed songs with the most popular movies, shows, and commercials is not a new phenomenon. Music was a major piece of visual media before anyone was even speaking on video or film. The use of popular artists or songs to illicit emotion or bring attention to a project has been happening for decades. #search #discovery #movies #television #music #tvmusic #filmmusic #socialmedia https://lnkd.in/erjrYCYX
One of the tentpole examples is Paul McCartney and Wing’s “Live and Let Die” for the 1973 James Bond film of the same name. Timmy Fisher’s recent addition to The Life of a Song series for Financial Times delves into the behind-the-scenes history of the song’s creation. Paul and Linda McCartney, working with former Beatles producer George Martin, crafted the track without knowing the cultural impact the song would have beyond the movie. Today it remains popular through the continued success of the Bond franchise and being covered by various artists throughout the years. What is your favorite James Bond theme song? #search #discovery #movies #television #music #tvmusic #filmmusic #socialmedia https://lnkd.in/e4VXVi_R

The joke may finally be on the Joker. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Todd Phillips’s highly anticipated musical follow-up to his Oscar-winning Joker film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, opened to a middling box office debut and earned a lackluster $40 million domestically. The film was initially projected to make $50 million to $65 million, with some prerelease projections having estimated the sequel would earn as much as $70 million domestically in its opening weekend. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ reportedly cost $200 million to make, with Phoenix reportedly taking home $20 million for the sequel and Gaga making about $12 million. Sources with knowledge of the film’s financials report that Folie à Deux will need to generate at least $450 million at the box office in order for the production to break even. It's clear the film has a long way to go if Warner Bros. hopes to recoup its investment. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dS_iwxWA

200 words. 5 weeks. $1.8 million. And cut from the final film. "Jitterbug" is roughly a 100-word song with a few lines of introductory dialogue. The musical number took five weeks to rehearse and film. It cost $80,000, or $1.8 million today. Why was it cut? - To shorten the film: For a movie about a journey, momentum matters. - To make the film timeless: Who knows what the Jitterbug is today? - To ensure tonal consistency: It's an upbeat song for a harrowing part of the film. What's most fascinating—and maybe most helpful for writers—is that "Jitterbug" was one of the first songs created for the film. Yet when the scene was considered as part of the whole, it was cut despite the enormous amount of time, effort, and cost put into it.
