I have come to realize that in designing dashboards, simplicity is key. I usually say that "There's simplicity in professionalism." You don't have to use complex colour pallette to make your dashboard visually appealing. When we use many colours in an attempt to make our visuals appealing, we create a lots of distractions. If there's one thing I have learned from designing dashboards, that would be cutting down on every distractions as much as possible. Tooltips in charts are small boxes that appear when a user hovers over or clicks on a data point or element, providing additional information without cluttering the visual. Imagine you are looking at a chart full of lines or bars, and it is like a treasure map with lots of numbers. It can be confusing, right? But when you move your cursor over a part of the chart, suddenly a tooltip appears like a helpful guide, telling you exactly what those numbers mean. They enhance the user experience by offering quick insights and detailed data that might not be immediately visible from the chart itself. This feature is especially useful for complex datasets where each point carries significant detail. Tooltips can display numerical values, percentages, or explanatory text, making them necessary for interactive reports or presentations where understanding data trends and specifics is important. In terms of design and functionality, tooltips can be customized to match the aesthetic of the chart and the branding of the presentation or report. They can be styled with different colors, fonts, and formats to ensure they are easily readable and consistent with the overall design. Tooltips are a small but powerful feature in data visualization! They serve not only as a guide but also enrich the storytelling aspect of data visualization. Hey dashboard designers. BANs (Big-Ass Numbers) Prior to working with Jeffrey Shaffer and Andy Cotgreave on the The Big Book of Dashboards I tended to look at BANs — large, occasionally overstuffed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) — as ornamental rather than informational. I thought they just took up space on a dashboard without adding much analysis. I’ve changed my mind and now often recommend their use to my clients. At least BANs with *context*.
